The wife and I went Tuesday. I got the Fillet and it was clutch. I've also had the Chicken dish that they say was in Southern Living and its really good. I dont think i've ever had a burger there.

I usually choose Embers over Spirits. I love the atmosphere there and they have live music on Thursday-Saturday nights.

I've never had Embers. My wife loves it, but complains about the wait time.

They are so hit and miss for both service and quality of food. Really, the only reason to go there is to sit at the bar and drink beer and Finnegan's Wake is better for that anyway. I ate at Spirits three nights ago and ordered a seafood platter. It had two softshell crabs on it which would have been a plus but that they were the only recognizable animal on the plate. Everything else was over-battered and fried beyond recognition (brown and hard). I couldn't tell what half the stuff was even after tasting it. Even though they have invested more money in the building, it was a much better restaurant before the previous owner sold out.

The best local eating establishments are:

Wildwood Pizza (Pizza & Salads)
Good People Kitchen (Lunch)
Atwoods (Bakery)
Cajun Landing
Embers (Pizza, salads and good beer selection)
Brocato's (Breakfast)
Outlaws (BBQ)
Bellino's (Italian)
Sake Sushi (Japanese, but currently shut down)
Critic's Choice (Hot Sandwiches)

ETA:

Apollo (Greek)
Pho (Vietnamese)

I am pretty sure it has the most profitable chick fil a in the country. Also go to Lou and Laura's. That place is delicious.

service was nice, but the hotel felt really old and not in the charming way either

Yea, I stayed there when I was doing work in Alexandria a few years ago. It was pretty shitty.

ETA: I think Alexandria is probably the shittiest actual city that I've been to in Louisiana (not including small towns)

If it wasn't for the water tower lights, it would need to be killed with fire.

My wife loves spirits and embers, but they are just ok to me. Embers is bad bc they want to charge you $13 or so for frickng pasta that is the size of a side dish. I know the owners are not small people so this disappoints me. Spirits is good enough, but they need someone to teach them how to fry seafood that isn't greasy as frick. Soft shell crabs are the worst and that's a waste

What is the BBQ place that used to be Luther's BBQ back in the day? Outlaw's or Eddie's?

Oak wing and Links are two great public golf courses

The zoo

Traffic is always flowing

Festivals are great, riverfete and winterfete have been great

Local restaurants are coming on strong

Great running and biking clubs/groups

Bike trails in Kincaid

Kincaid and Indian Creek boating in nice clean lake

Close to Toledo, Saline
And tons of good fishing.

Low property taxes

Magnet schools all the way through, with open high school enrollment

Plenty of church options, whether Protestant or Catholic

Good neighborhoods to make friends and have kids play

Johnny Downs recreation for baseball and soccer is a great facility

Open door to city govt. officials

Four new hotels including reopening the Bentley and Mirror zoom

If you are an outgoing involved type, you will have more than enough to do

I grew up in Pineville and gravitated PHS in mid 90's. Wonder if I know any of of y'all? Fond memories of the Pineville and Alex ladies. Was always fun having a couple on the hook across the river.

Was a ton of fun growing up there and my folks still live in the same house. Enjoy going back to visit but not near enough career opportunities...or really enough of anything besides hunting and fishing.

To the op, if you like small towns it will be fine. Lot of great people there. I still have a few good friends there that never left. I'll just settle for killing ducks at their places when I go home to visit.

My wife Mary and young son Noah and I take monthly trips to Alex to eat at Pamela's Bayou In A Bowl and pray at Emmanuel Baptist Church. I've had some of the best times of my life in Alex. I'm considering moving there, actually.
