It's funny how like every 10-15 years somebody gives it a go of reopening that place, only to shutter it up again 2-3 years later. It's a pretty interesting building to be in the middle of downtown Elick, though.

It's shite tbh. Seems like the crime rate is steadily rising. Watched a shootout in the mall parking lot last year. Mall itself looks abandoned and there isn't much there.

Good looking women, no traffic, and a few decent public schools (which is rare for a southern mid-sized city)

It's close to Natchitoches.

Pretty close to almost anywhere in Louisiana not counting the extreme southeast part of the state.

They closed down the paper mill in Pineville.

It smells less like shite. That's the best thing. That's it.

Shipley Donuts
Quebedeaux's
Robbie G's
Atwood's
Oriental Wok
El Paso Mexican is delicious
Tunks, Katfish Kitchen, other decent restaurants are close
I've heard good stuff about American spirits but have not been

Entertaining local history and politics.

Decent children's museum, good zoo, nice other areas museums. Kent house, Lloyd's Hall, live oak, other area plantations are nice venues to see.

Decent arts scene for the size town (symphony, theater, ballet). Casino is a fun nearby diversion.

Accessible and affordable college options. Decent local schools for young kids.

Decent public parks (so long as you're diligent about watching out for pervs). Good access to golf and tennis, water sports, fishing. Good youth sports programs.

Low housing prices and low traffic. Easy access to every other Louisiana city.

Cute Mardi gras parade (family friendly in spots).

I grew up there and go back to visit a couple times a year. It's changed a lot, but in many ways is the same. It's improved for sure; when I left, England AFB had only been closed a few years and the area was struggling. Much of the stuff listed above didn't exist.

Only thing missing from my list that used to be there that I'd love to have back is the Family Fun Park near the zoo.

Catfish Snyder?

I was telling my nephew that story the other day. He's 16 and to him, 9/11 is ancient history. Still, he even saw the outcome before I finished the story. I was little when that happened, but still remember it.

I worked with his ex-wife one summer at Cabrini. Dude was a complete nut.

The catfish story was in National Enquirer and other tabloids.

He couldn't stand the idea of black and white kids swimming in the same pool. After 2 days and a pool full of dead catfish, the smell was horrible.

My asst principal was black gentleman named Columbus Goodman. He was also a Police Juror. Paul Snyder got on the news and challenged him to a debate. Said it was "byob" though. And then he said, "Bring your own bananas"

I was very glad to be from the other side of the river.

When I'm up there, I stay at the Parc England Boutique Inn and eat at Bistro on the Bayou. I look forward to both.

However sometime staying at the casino in Marksville and driving in is a better time.

BYOB, that's awful.

On the other hand, you had to grow up with the stigma of Pineville and "the place where the white trees grow" thing.

BTW, glad to know the paper mill is closed. I drove on the expressway a few weeks ago while I was there, and worried I was losing my sense of smell because it didn't immediately assault me.

I stand corrected, then. The paper mill closing was the best thing about Pineville.

It's looking like Alexandria doesn't have a best thing.

One day about 15 years ago I had a few hours to kill in Alex in the early afternoon. I started to drive around to find something to do and cake across the zoo. I like animals so I figured it couldn't be too bad a way to pass a couple hours. I was blown away. Now, it isn't a world class facility, but for the size of the city it is a great zoo. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Other than that- not a lot I can tell you.

Billy's (Krotz Springs) and Quebedeaux's are owned by the same family. Quebedeaux's is owned by the daughter and son-in-law of the owner of Billy's.

Billy's has won awards for their boudin....Quebedeaux's is using the same recipe....it's a family secret apparently.

The Ellick airport is very good, thanks to the military connection. Not crowded, easy to get in and out of. Multiple daily flights to Houston, Dallas, ATL.
