Two stand out in 2013 took a two week trip to San Francisco and got upgraded tor free to a Camaro convertible which was awesome especially in early October....put roughly 3000 miles on in two weeks...they probably weren't expecting that much unlimited mileage usage
Later same year when Mom passed away got upgraded at NO airport to a Cadillac SRX
Very nice vehicle

I'm driving a Kia Soul right now. At first I was like wtf, but it's a pretty fun little car, with plenty of space inside.
Coolest car I ever got loaned though was a GMC Acadian, fully loaded.

Cadillacs from National.

A Mercedes. Rented it in England for some work. It was the most economical rate available though expensive for the States. But duh, it's Europe. Had no idea it was going to be a Mercedes.

Rented a Chevy aero hatchback when I was in college. That sucker got some quality airtime over the railroad tracks south of SLU.

I had to put my f150 in the shop for some warranty work and got a Ford Fiesta two door hatchback rental. It was fricking awesome! Especially since I'm 6'2".

Chevy Cruise. Solid car.

I travel for work and rent cars at airports frequently. I usually get a Kia Optima, Chrysler 200, Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Camry, or Ford Fusion. Of those, the Kia Optima is my favorite rental.
I got a Malibu once that had a really fancy interior and I liked it. Quiet, solid car but the exterior styling is weird. The engine shut off if you were sitting at a traffic light to save fuel and sprang back to life when you hit the accelerator. Very cool, but kind of unnerving the first time it happens.
My least favorite "upgrade" is easily the Ford Taurus. It's a massive car with zero visibility, and somehow Ford made it very cramped inside. My left shoulder hits the B pillar and my knees hit the dash. It's an absolutely terrible car and I turn it down now even if it's a free upgrade.
My favorite "upgrade" was a Chevy Camaro convertible even though I think it was just a V6. It would have been better if it was in southern California and not Minneapolis. I occasionally get a Toyota 4Runner or Chevy Tahoe upgrade...both of which I like very much.
I usually get a free upgrade once every 6 or 7 rentals.

Nice!
I think a CTS or E-class is at least 3 or 4 "upgrade" tiers for me. I was right behind someone who rented a brand new Escalade once. Those things are very nice.
I'll probably never get a Cadillac, Mercedes, or Lexus as an upgrade unless they run out of everything else.

Nicest rental would be an Explorer XLT or Dodge Challenger
Nicest loaner would be a brand new ram 4x4 1500, received it while they worked on mine. Took it back on 4 wheeler trails and ran the shite out of it.
Honolulu has a fun little rental place downtown with higher end cars for the day.

Went to Oklahoma to visit family. Rented a convertible mustang. V6, nothing special, but I was only 17 at the time so I thought I had big nuts.
