If you're single-Lafayette
If you have kids-Lafayette
Best food outside of New Orleans- Lafayette
Close to off shore work but still nice- Lafayette
Want to live the thug life- north Lafayette

ETA: I forgot you're a liberal. Lafayette is probably not the best place for you. Stick with Nola

I agree. I think it's a place for young professional types who can't quite afford living in Uptown. At least that's the vibe I get.

Just how expensive is it to live uptown? I've seen some decent properties in the low 200s there. That would work for me. I don't need anything big. Just something decent in a safe area.

Lakeview is not cheaper than Uptown.

If we are talking rentals anyway.

Lakeview will bore the hell out of anyone looking for the party scene.

Gotcha,

I have no idea about home prices. However, if you are looking for nightlife go Uptown. Lakeview bars are uh.... suburban.

Maybe you're right, but I don't know any young single professionals that live in lakeview.

Edit: let me clarify this, there are a lot that live there because they boomeranged back into their parent's homes.

Well if that's the case the only answer is Gentilly. LOL

The only people I know in Lakeview are that, but it seems like I'm way off here.

Hey now, I wouldn't totally rule it out. Because of the overload in lakeview, some areas in Gentilly are busy with new construction.

I won't rule anything out. And I've been in some pretty nice homes in Gentilly.

But for the most part it doesn't interest me.

If you are going to be working offshore, I would look in the warehouse district, maybe a condo or something. Nobody knows when you aren't home and you don't have to worry about getting someone to take of "house stuff" while you are gone.

Mandeville/covington or lafayette
Some other cool places are the Diversion Canal, Uptown New Orleans, garden district Baton Rouge, and Thibodaux

I think when you start realizing what the real estate prices are in N.O. these days, especially in Lakeview and Uptown, you might come around to looking at the places you used to think weren't all that great.
