If you are going to be working offshore, I would look in the warehouse district, maybe a condo or something. Nobody knows when you aren't home and you don't have to worry about getting someone to take of "house stuff" while you are gone.

Yeah as much as I'd prefer a single family home I've thought about the condo option.

Only way I get a house is if my girlfriend follows me there since she has dogs.

think when you start realizing what the real estate prices are in N.O. these days, especially in Lakeview and Uptown, you might come around to looking at the places you used to think weren't all that great

I think the increase in real estate prices in Lakeview and Uptown have helped improve the surrounding neighborhoods. Like you said, people that would be dead set on living in these hot spots settle around these areas since the prices are less. Over time this should help clean up some of the previously "less desirable" areas.

It sounds like you are familiar with the area, so maybe you and your GF should ride around and look at some places. See if it fits in what you want to do and go from there.

It's a wonderful thing to see what is happening around the city.

Slowly, it seems the Irish Channel and the Tulane corridor are starting their process too.

Lafayette is surely a feasible place to live; however, NOLA and the Northshore are more desirable IMO.

Lakeview is not cheaper than Uptown.

If we are talking rentals anyway.

I feel like Uptown is more expensive for rentals for equal quality

Wait, you lived in BR and you are worried about Laffy being too conservative????

Lafayette is NOT becoming Austin. You can barely catch a live act during the week ANYWHERE in Laffy.

I live in Lafayette and I'm from the BR area, FWIW

I went to LSU. I just hear that Laffy area is filled with a bunch of red meat republican types

Maybe that isn't true

It's an oil town. You aren't going to find a large contingent of union loving environmentalists here. That said, the number of "liberals" in the oil industry would doubtless surprise you.

Since LA has about 6 of the top 10 ranked happiest places to live in the US, you can't hardly miss. Just pick 1 of those top 6 LA cities and you are good to go.
