I could've joined the Air Force as an Airborne Cryptologic Language Analyst. My recruiter told me it translated well to the civilian sector. All I had to do was past some test that assesses your ability to learn another language.

Seemed like it would've been a good gig, but I decided to go to college right out of high school.

Unfortunately it is not that simple. You get to prefer but they offer you a job and you can accept or reject.

I can't speak for the Air Force but in the Navy alot of it has to do with your ASVAB score. I scored a 98 and I pretty much got to choose my job. Make sure all of this is in your contract because once you join you lose all your rights as a citizen.

Air Traffic Control, flight ops, radar tech/electronics, anything in the medical field would be my choices for my kid. I was intelligence (not much relates in the civilian world), then switched over to helicopter pilot after.

One of my sons is considering joining the Air Force. What are some of the better jobs that may lead to high demand
Navy offers far more for post military career pay. Nuclear, IT, Aviation, Electronic Warfare, Navy Medicine.... On a couple of our job titles don't translate to the civilian world. And he could change jobs within the Navy if he wants.

I worked in Bioenvironmental Engineering. OSHA/EPA/Preventive Medicine is the best way to describe it. It translates pretty well to the outside. I'm an industrial hygienist now and a lot of the training and certs that I obtained in the military were valuable on the outside as well. The whole GI Bill deal worked out to help me on my way to a degree as well. Government environmental and safety regulations aren't going away anytime soon.

high demand/high paying civilian careers

If he can handle stress, then Air Traffic Controller.

If he's good working on cars, then motorpool. Auto mechanics seem to be cleaning up these days.

I took that same test and they wanted to send me to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California to learn Chinese. They said I had an aptitude for it. I opted instead to stay with my original plan of becoming a radio nav technician. I often wondered how different my life would have been if I had taken the other path.

My cousin is doing security forces. He says it sucks. Unless you get an armory gig or like being a cop.

Dog handler and Raven are probably the best route to go if you are in that career field.

They just lost some guys this week in Afghanistan.

Hence the stud comment.

If you test well physically and mentally; you will be given a shot.

The Security Police are where they put people that the army should have taken.

CE is probably the best job. They teach you how to put in light bulbs abd change AC filters.

Been down that route I know all about it.

Also takes a great deal of luck. Being a PT stud and not wanting to give up is only part of it.

My fraternity brother just got his red beret a couple weeks ago.

No but seriously CE has some sweet as gigs.

If you go Red Horse the opportunities are endless.
