I recently came into possession of some multi-vitamin pills on a whim. Of course they have all of these nutrients in them for us, but have any of y'all ever taken them regularly and noticed any benefits?

it's not totally a shame, because you do get at a little nutritional value from them, but the health benefits from taking a multivitamin has been grossly overstated for a long time...

I have gone through periods where I took them and periods where I did not take them. can't say I saw any effects at all whether I take them or not.

I think that if you happen to be deficient in some particular vitamin or mineral, they will fill that void...but if you eat anything near a balanced diet, you won't see a difference at all.

In your opinion, is there any over counter that people should be taking

I had been getting sick quite often last year even with getting a flu shot: colds, ear infections, shingles, stomach virus on ny eve, etc. Started taking a multivitamin in mid january and have felt better since (haven't gotten sick). I figured it couldn't hurt to get some extra vitamins that I apparently hadn't been getting from my diet and exercise

This is why the idea to get some popped into my head. I tend to go through phases where I'll get sick frequently. Glad to hear it's worked for you.

not really... i know it would sound like a cliche, but a healthy, balance diet is far better than depending on getting your nutrition in pill form...

even with getting a flu shot

you do realize that ONLY protects you from the flu, right? its not a super, covers-all-sickness shot... it will vaccinate you from the flu, if they get the strains right, which most of the time they do...

figured it couldn't hurt

actually, it could hurt... see, most vitamins are water soluble, and what you don't absorb and use, you just piss out... but A,D,E and K are fat soluble, and don't just get eliminated... over time, it COULD be possible to have adverse effects from those...

considering that cough and cold season is pretty much over, that's not exactly Dead Sea Scrolls levels of surprising...

you are the only person in the history of time itself that has gotten vitamins from exercise... congrats on your achievement...

While you will urinate out a lot of the vitamins, I think a multi should be a staple for everyone. Most people do not get their recommended daily vitamin intake through food alone. You may not "feel" anything, but you will be healthier.

I think you get more benefits from the minerals and a,d,e, and k.

The Mega doses of c and b you just piss out 90% of it

Well, mega doses of your fat soluble vitamins (ADEK) have potential toxicities. Some worse than others.

True

But I still don't know what a mega dose of e is

I can take 2400% of the dra and haven't had any side effects except for a larger load

this a false equivalence, as well as a false narrative...

what's really funny about this thread is you have a doctor AND a pharmacist both saying that it may not be the best idea to take a multivitamin, yet we have a contingency that want to try to contend with that...

like i tell some of my more frustrating patients.... do what you want to do, you aren't going to listen to me anyway, and i got things to do...

Why wouldnt your body use them? What happens if your body doesn't use them, where do they go? What effects could thy have on you?
