Cost of living if they don't live in BR. I saved a boat load of money living at home the last two years after my first degree.

It's not sexy, but when you save $20,000 it's worth it.

Just saw that Dr Mattei of UNO was just appointed national president of ASCE for all the UNO civil structurals out there.

I got full ride...you know, no brainer there.

Plus, the employment rate for my program was better out of McNeese than LSU at the time.

Personally, I don't think I would be where I am had I gone to LSU. Made connections at McNeese that benefited in the long run.

Graduated from SELU debt free. Lived like an OT baller from the amount of money the school was giving me to attend. Likewise, if I would have attended LSU I would have taken on significant student debt. That's just one circumstance to answer your question.

That is a dumb argument.

For TOPS to cover a 4 year college in LA: GPA 2.5, ACT 20

LSU bare minimum for admissions: GPA 3, ACT 22

LSU 2016 Freshman Class Avg: GPA 3.4, ACT 26

Smaller schools and smaller classrooms benefit certain people more than flagship university and the 200 kids in freshman English.

Tech was giving me enough to cover everything with the help of TOPS. I just couldn't do it. Didn't know anyone going there and couldn't imagine moving up to Ruston by myself. Nothing academically brought me to LSU. I just always thought it'd be fun to go there. Don't think my parents were thrilled, but I would have never finished 4 years at TECH.

Tech's financial aid is much more generous than LSU's. My cousin's kid just picked Tech over LSU for that reason. He got a lot of money over and above TOPS from Tech. LSU's offer was miniscule.

Same.

And I was seriously worried about falling into LSU's party culture as a freshman. Wanted to transfer by about junior year but at that point was way too comfortable and settled in where I was. The amount of money Southeastern was giving me was really insignificant in retrospect.

Don't know why you got so many downvotes.

LA Tech's engineering program is lightyears ahead of LSU. Especially in terms of relevant projects and academic support.

LSUs admission standards keep ULL and LA Tech in business.

Not sure if that's true. While LSU requires a higher GPA (3.0 vs 2.5) they require lower test scores (ACT 22 vs 23 & SAT 1030 vs 1050).

but to answer the original questions
quote:

There are schools other than LSU that offer comparable or even better degrees in certain curricula. At least there were back in the stone ages when I went to college.

But I think the primary reason is non tuition costs. Room and board is very expensive. Also, some kids don't want to go to far from home.

Yes, why on earth would a poor kid from Monroe go to ULM instead of LSU?
