exactly. the ticket is just notice of the (1) accusation and (2) court date. that's it

So do camera tickets say you're guilty? I think not. It basically says that this vehicle was photographed doing something illegal and here's the fine. If this wasn't you or you want to dispute it, here what you have to do. Really NO DIFFERENT than a normal ticket.

What rights are you giving up?

mainly confrontation, as you cannot subpoena a machine to testify at a trial

also each system is different, but typically you're not given a trial...you're given an administrative hearing

basically the video is rubber stamped by an officer after the fact, and then you show up for an administrative hearing if you protest. from what i've been told, it's just you and the admin judge. there is no confrontation. there is no subpoena power. and since the rubber stamping occurred, there is basically a presumption of guilt already

I buy that it's not a safety issue, and it's really a money grab, but why is that a bad thing.

Because I care more about safety than I do the city government earning money? As someone who drives, has a wife who drives, has two children who drive with us and others...I'd prefer the traffic system be set up in a way that REALLY makes it as safe as possible for all drivers and passengers...not just pretends to. Plus...I'm really big on not rewarding liars, and the fact that they are describing it a a safety measure really fricking pisses me off.

quote:

Person breaks a law, gets ticketed, pays a fine. What's the harm in that?

See above. The crime in this case is, essentially, arbitrary to a degree. It's only a crime to prevent people from driving in total anarchy. But the truth is...and anyone whose driven for any length of time knows this...most drivers DO follow most driving laws. I mean...the vast majority of lights do not have cameras or cops around...and yet most people don't just run them. Knowing this, the only issue is with a car or two that may run it at the tail end of a cycle. Why not simply allow for this, make the change time a little longer?

My issue is with driver safety...not with enforcing laws which may or may not have any direct effect on safety.

You are guilty until proven innocent under these for-profit law enforcement ventures. The list can go on from there, but this is a pretty big one.

NO, as long as I still have the rights to fight if I feel I've received a ticket unjustly. Sorry, I'm not a conspiracy theorist. And do you think the government does a better job of running operations that private organizations?

I've never heard of anyone fighting one of these tickets and getting it thrown out. You?

re: Baton Rouge Red Light Cameras Approved for 5 More Years
I know that the NOLA cams are all about safety and have nothing to do with revenue generation when I see that nearly every speed/red light cam is placed within 3 blocks of every white, private school, yet virtually none are placed near the black, public schools.

I've also nearly rear ended 3 people because they stood on their brakes the second the yellow light came on when approaching a traffic cam.

Actually. it's not. If you do not show up for a real ticket, a bench warrant issues for you. If you ignore a camera ticket, it goes to some big place in the sky where several million $ in unpaid tickets are waiting.

LINK

BTW, you can have your day in court. They pay retired judges to go listen to the oppositions, some of whom think the tickets are BS.

This.

In Memphis the caution lights are so short. I probably ran more red lights in the last year than in all my other driving years combined. They're so short that if you're approaching a green light, you have to start slowing down so you're not slamming on your brakes as soon as it turns yellow.

No you're not! No more than receiving a ticket from an officer. It's a notice of a violation.

And you absolutely have the right to fight it, just like an other ticket. Is it less likely to get thrown out because it's a camera ticket? I don't know. I guess since the courts have a photo of you and your car, it probably is less likely. If a police officer issued the ticket and he didn't show up for court, you'll probably get off.

So since this system provides physical evidence which possibly makes it more difficult to prove you innocence then the system is unjust?

Come on Doc.

So what is the difference between a camera ticket and an officer issued ticket.

The safety arguments are completely valid. If they wanted to make intersections safer then they can do a lot more than traffic cameras. These cameras are NOT about safety.

Are there any red light cameras in North BR? I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess no.

You either work for the city or the red light camera company.

You argue from a bureaucrat POV.
