Audi have successfully made diesel fuel from carbon dioxide and water

German car manufacturer Audi has reportedly invented a carbon-neutral diesel fuel, made solely from water, carbon dioxide and renewable energy sources. And the crystal clear 'e-diesel' is already being used to power the Audi A8 owned by the country’s Federal Minister of Education and Research, Johanna Wanka.
This is a huge step in the right direction for alternative fuels.

I doubt it. It's not like the Fischer-Tropsch process has been hidden.

So we go from using 1 limited resources (oil) for fuel to using another limited resource (water)? What am I missing here? The diagram looks like they are creating water somehow.

From what I understand, since the water is transformed to steam, it's ok to use saltwater.

Water isnt limited. Unless you are in Cali.

was coming here to post something similar. This process was developed somewhere in the 1920's.

But all may not be as it seems. The process used by Audi is actually called the Fischer-Tropsch process and has been known by scientists since the 1920s. It was even used by the Germans to turn coal into diesel during the Second World War when fuel supplies ran short. The process is currently used by many different companies all around the world, especially in countries where reserves of oil are low but reserves of other fossils fuels, such as gas and coal, are high.
Per the IFLS post.

That water is not a limited resource. You need to go offshore fishing to appreciate how much water we have.

I'd like to hear more about step 4 - refining. How much energy is being used to convert ambient CO2 into diesel fuel?
Seems like it would be more efficient to simply replace other energy sources with the wind powered electricity. But I guess that wouldn't "capture" the CO2.
Is that process more or less efficient than just planting a bunch of CO2 munching plants (living plants, not chemical refining "plants" )?

If they can use salt water then we have enough for milleniums

the oil companies will shoot it down in no time

The problem then is how make salt disposal cost effective.

I mean, they've had 90 years to shoot it down.

When are they going to make a cheap and efficient way to desalinate water?
That would solve so much.

Good point. Trust me, I barely understand the engineering going on here. I just know there are some companies doing some really cool stuff with biodiesel and that diesel engines can drive on a lot of, shall we say interesting, things.
You'd be surprised how often old cleaned motor oil is added to certain diesel grades to avoid paying retail/tax.

Diesels run off of damn near anything. Someday we'll probably be able to run our cars off of urine.
