I'm an attorney who recently started my first job after passing the bar. My father wants to buy me a nice briefcase in celebration and he told me to decide on one I like.

So, what briefcases do yall have or recommend? Should I go soft case, hard case, rolling, shoulder strap, leather, etc.?

Pics and links would be appreciated.

Haven't seen anyone past the first link to a Samsonite ( ).

Saddleback Leather. If you buy anything else you're crazy.

The problem with the Filson briefcase is it doesn't stand up on its own. That drives me crazy. The Orvis one does. +1 to Orvis.

Only one way to let the judge know you mean business when you enter a courtroom is to stroll in with one of these:

this is mine. it has 3 sections (1 for paperwork, one for laptop, and one for electronic gadgets/pens/etc). sturdy leather, stands up on its own, expandable, and more than enough room for daily court use

Those leather ones get beat to shite...maybe the Samsonite is better than what I had, but I always had people on the elevator making fun of how worn my was. Now, I am back to the nylon.

get something in tan leather that will last, but will patina with use. after 10 years, it will make you look like you've had a few more years of experience. then keep a good stock of expando files, because that's what you will carry to court most days.

Roller?

Roller?

Please tell me this isn't a serious consideration for your first briefcase. Nothing says I'm a lazy fricker than a rolling briefcase for 5 lbs of crap. For a large court case, airport travel, etc. okay. But not for a first nice briefcase.

legit answer for OP:

I would make sure that whatever you choose has divided sections on the inside for your files so you can keep cases separate. Lot's of pockets for different needs...cell phone, pens, business cards and so on.

Make sure the briefcase can hold legal files if that is what your firm uses. If they use letter sized files, you're fine.

I prefer the look of soft leather briefcases rather than the traditional hard shell cases.

Rather than search this board I would google best attorney briefcases and start there and find a style that fits your needs. BUT PERSONALLY, I would tell your father that you think it would be best that you work for a few months and he buy it then so you have a better idea as to what your needs are. I guess what I'm saying is, no one on here will know the answer as to what you need because I have no idea what area of law you will work in or how much you will be traveling. Nothing worse than buying an expensive item and it not fit any of your needs. Take some time.

You need the Filson Original Briefcase. LINK. It will look better in 8 years than it does new. Pick your color of choice, I have brown to blend in but they all look great.

If you get some $1000 Frank Clegg right out the gate, people will not like you. If you get a Samsonite, people will know you're lame as shite.
