I preferred to hire older people, they tend to make for better workers.

Did some of them dislike being ordered around by a younger person? Yeah, but I treated them with respect and more often than not they returned in kind.

Some will often complain about the way things are done compared to previous employment but then it's a matter of evaluating if they are right or not. Often times they have been around long enough to have seen something attempted and actual work that can apply to your current workplace. Even if they are just bitching about having to do things differently, I get 30yos doing the exact same shite.

I also find my older employees appreciation that I am willing to roll up my sleeves and get into the thick of things with them when needed instead of just being a desk jockey all day.

In 20+ years of management, 50 & 60yo often outwork the 18-23yo crowd.

Long story short, managing people in 50s feels weird since they remind you of your parents so extra empathy but feel that’s just ageist so a bit uncomfortable. How do you deal with non ambitious boomers?

I treat them exactly the same way that I treat people who are younger than me. 90%+ of the people who I manage are older than me.

If one of them invites you to Sonic for lunch, look out for the old man strength.

How can this be true? You know they have no desire to grow next 5-10 same as a 25 year old

If this is your attitude then you're not a good manager to employees of any age.

I'm older and work for this young guy that isn't very productive. He spends most of his time during the day posting random questions on the OT.

Expect them to perform just like anyone else in the same position. If they can't then they become expendable.

Give them ripe bananas. Old people like soft food.

I don't understand how you're in a position to manage anyone.

you have to be a lil tougher with them especially when it comes to learning new skills. a lot of them think they know everything already.

If you have to ask this you're not ready to be a manager.

Older employees do have extended illnesses on Occasion .. In cases where you have an outstanding employee, that is out of the office 4-5 months, in forced ranking for the year you would have to rate the person no more than average because of no contribution during the extended illness.

Look at it like a team.
Each person brings a specific skill.
You praise them for good things and suggest ways to do this differently if they do things poorly.
Make them come up with a way to do things better.
If they been in a position for awhile that why I said the above.

You always have some you have to look over their backs and others you can give a list of task, they will get it done.

It does not matter any age always knows each persons strength and weaknesses. Use this to make everyone gel as a team.
