Same as you treat any other employee.

I’ve found out in my career most times the older employees (if with the company for awhile) are more dependable and take more pride in their jobs. Now some younger employees also do great jobs.

I’m in my early 50s but I worked a side job through much of my 40s at a hardware store, even a couple years at restaurant. Before I got in the fire service I was in the restaurant business. I had managers at the hardware store younger than me and we got along fine, granted, again I was just a part timer.

Some were intimidated at first since I was older and in the fire service (yes, that seems dumb to me also) but once they realized I’m laid back and never cared about discussing my main job they eased up. I’ll work hard for anyone, even a shitty boss. A shitty boss for a part time job I’ll just simply leave. As far as how to act just be respectful and like others have said, if being good with computers isn’t needed, give them that leeway.

I treat them the same as younger ones.

You can’t treat them different or let them get away with things because they are older.

This right here. I see what he has to put up with. No fricking way.

Yep. My manager doesn't make that much more than the senior people on his team. Maybe 15-20% more pay for 80% more headache. No thanks.

I feel like this sort of issue is harder for people who didn’t play organized team sports or weren’t in the military. The chain of command comes way more naturally to people who have experience with either. I never really thought about age in those roles when I used to work.

That is because the old guys won't tolerate any bullshite.

Same way I deal with people younger than me.

Reward good people. If someone isn't getting it done, try to help them, and if that doesn't work, move on.

Just shoot straight with them . Tell them what you need, then get the frick out of the way while they get shite done.
And don't try to BS them. They'll see right through you.

Love this thread where all the mid level managers fly in like moths to a flame and tell us what’s what about management.

Geez, tell them the fries aren’t going to cook themselves and the soft serve guy is coming in tomorrow to fix the machines.

Long story short, managing people in 50s feels weird since they remind you of your parents so extra empathy but feel that’s just ageist so a bit uncomfortable. How do you deal with non ambitious boomers?

Stupid troll, calling Gen X people boomers. You should be fired for being a shitty manager.

Well for starters, I don’t talk about them the way you do.

Translation: Don’t be a d-bag about it.

Same as everyone else.

In some ways easier because they're older and more mature. So they don't get worked up about you being younger.

I'm on the other side now. My boss is a younger woman.

I was a manager at my last job and we hired a retired Army Major on the same pay scale as me. He literally couldn't wrap his head around that a former Army E-4 and a retired O-4 were on the same level in the civilian world.
