A motorist's attempt to pass an 18-wheeler on the shoulder of Interstate 10 in foggy conditions apparently triggered Tuesday night's fatal crash that sent a tractor-trailer plummeting off the Middle Pearl River bridge east of Slidell, State Police said Wednesday (Nov. 4). The motorist, driving a black pickup truck, fled the scene and is still being sought.

quote:

The driver of the westbound pickup tried to pass an 18-wheeler on the right shoulder shortly before 9 p.m. but he ran out of room because the shoulder ended at the bridge, State Police Sgt. Nick Manale said. The motorist swerved back into the right lane but hit the tractor-trailer, he said.

Authorities said two 18-wheelers were driving in the right and left lanes of the two-lane highway and Coy tried to pass the 18-wheeler in the right lane by driving on the right shoulder.

But as he approached the bridge over the Middle Pearl River, Coy suddenly swerved to the left -- back into the right traffic lane -- to avoid crashing into the bridge guardrail. Coy's vehicle crashed into the front of the truck in the right lane, then veered into the left lane where it crashed into the 18-wheeler driven by Clark. The impact pushed Clark's rig over the cement barrier and into the water below.

figures. people are so quick to blame the truck drivers. hopefully there is some kind of dash cam or traffic cam type thing to help with the pickup driver.

Is there even a shoulder on that bridge?

He attempted to pass on the shoulder before the bridge and it ran out at the bridge. He tried to beat the truck, triggering the crash

No, there isn't. Not even a narrow 2 foot wide one.

What the report meant was that the pass was attempted prior to the bridge and the driver swerved back into the lane because there is no shoulder on the bridge.

I hope they find him. He should have some damage to his truck.

I drive it twice a day and I could definitely not fit my 1500 truck on the shoulder with enough room to pass an 18 wheeler. damn shame that someone lost their life bc another person was so fricking impatient

were the truck drivers matching speed?

Not that it matters but I have passed a trucker on the shoulder for this very reason in Alabama. Was behind two truckers for more than ten miles, they were side by side the whole time. Eventually the shoulder got really wide and I passed on it.

Though in the fog? never.

I think dash cams need to be used more often.

(but do not buy the ones for less than $30, they are crap)
We would always have camera footage of each wreck.
Simple little devices, I think they are required in Russia for Comprehensive and collision coverage.

Hopefully this guy feels like a piece of shite and turns himself in. I couldn't imagine knowing I killed someone because I was driving like an idiot.

pickup truck v 18wheeler...trucker did something wrong...pick up trucks cannot outweigh an 18wheeler and force them to do anything

I don't get it either. Even if it was a F250 or something big, I don't see how it cutting into the cab or the trailer would cause the truck to go right, unless the truck first went left to soften impact or avoid the truck and then over-corrected right. The truck itself must not have been hit too hard if it were able to drive off. So I would think, the bed of the truck hit the cab of the Semi. Anything else towards the back would have caused more damage to the other truck and or pinned it. The truck going off the rails to the right means most likely it cut back way too hard right.
Have to wait for the full investigation.

Totally agree. Let's stop putting people in jail for smoking a plant and replace them with stupid assholes who want to play Russian roulette with others' lives by pulling stupid stunts like this. They are way more dangerous to me.
