It's free to persons under 45 yoa. It really could save a life. All it takes is a swab of your cheeks. No doctor's visit.

Be the Match

Do it for our Bay-bays.

When you are taken into the operating room, you will be placed on your stomach. A special needle is placed through the skin into the marrow cavity of the hipbone, where stem cells and blood are aspirated. Two or three skin punctures are made on each rear hipbone. Although the punctures will not show, there are bone punctures underneath the skin. To obtain rich marrow, many small aspirations must be done. Once the procedure is finished, a bandage is placed over the needle marks to protect them. About 1 to 2 quarts of bone marrow are collected during the harvest procedure.

Looks like a real pain in the rear

Doesn't that hurt like hell?

Eta. Yeah, just read down. Nope.

So they put you to sleep or dope you up? So many important questions. I could use a good sleep.

Cost $100 to join...

I might need a transplant someday, so I hope there's a lot of donors.

Well I'd do it for someone I knew. I might even break you off some marrow, but I will wait til then.

Sedation is given.

Hammer isn't used much anymore. Drill is used now.

True boring story:

I was a match for someone a few years ago and had to go back for some follow-up tests. Was prepped and ready to go to a hospital in Carolina somewhere and they called and told me it was no longer necessary. It was kind of a downer cause I figured what happened. But I'd suggest everybody sign up, you could save someone's life and it's an excuse to eat steak for a couple weeks.

Yeah it's unpleasant, but I'd be willing to bet it's less unpleasant than dying, so considerate it a win for humanity. And you can eat steak, which is paid for by donors (usually).

So that's where the $100 goes...to buying other people steaks?

I would do it for friends and family and for the sedation, but not paying $100 to have this hanging over my head everyday. Nope, no way, jose. That's a lot of pressuree, what if the vattery in my pager dies or I don't have change for the pay phone?

I have CLL, so if normal cancer treatments don't work I'll have to have one. Not that far along yet though

It's $100 for persons older than 44. Free if you're younger.

Yeah I remembered that you had a type of Leukemia.

Hopefully you will not have to do that.

Donating can't be as bad as donating a kidney or a lung or whatever and I would do that tomorrow if someone I knew needed one.

Edit. Actually it appears I'm almost out of the targeted age range of 18-44.

I know, I have been in the OR when they have harvested it, just thought I would spice up the thread

The odds of being chosen are slim. I never really gave the procedure as much thought as you guys have. I was more motivated by giving a family a little hope.

Eh. Let your own conscience be your guide.

I had a friend of mine die from a blood cancer. Decided to register then and there. The process was free and easy. They send you the packet, you swab your cheek, and you send it back.

ETA: there are two ways to get marrow. The traditional one is the one above, but the newer one just involves getting an IV placed and sitting on a dialysis type machine for a few hours.
