Peej is godfather to my eldest daughter. He showed up drunk halfway through one of her dance recitals one time but I know he loves her and would die for her

Sometimes godparents are picked for religious reasons, but sometimes they are picked because the parent feels obligated to pick that family member. Easier than dealing with family drama.

As far as parents dying goes, Whoever is in the will gets the kids. Has nothing to do with godparent.

My friend asked me a few months ago if I ever was confirmed as a Catholic(was raised Catholic but farthest I went officially was first communion). Even though I'm not Catholic anymore I guess she could have had me as a godmother to her son on some loophole?

Im not a Godfather but I'm a Parrain.

Basically stand at the kids side when he got baptized, tell him dirty jokes, bring him do stuff, and raise him in the eyes of the Lord if something ever happens to his parents.

Yep, I'm godfather to my nephew. He's 24 so if his parents auger in, pretty sure he'll be ok. But I'd take him in in a heartbeat. we hunt/ fish together. Not having kids of my own, it's pretty nice to have that relationship with him.

I don't think you can actually be the godfather if you aren't catholic. I don't think they made a legit offer to you. Going to the baptism and all those ceremonies is kind of the entire point of being a godparent.

Eta: here's a faq about the requirements. You don't qualify.

LINK

Eta2: also, all you godparents in here who use condoms or have an SO who uses the pill or personally use the pill are breaking the rules and not qualified for the responsibility.

An OP below commented being a Godparent was no biggie. I respectfully disagree.

In an Anglican baptism (it maybe much the same in a Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist or Presbyterian baptism) one could argue that nearly as much responsibility is put on the Godparents to raise the child in the Faith and prepare them for Confirmation as is required of the parents.

From 1928 Book of Common Prayer/Rite of Baptism:
quote:

When the Office is used for Children, the Minister shall speak unto the Godfathers and Godmothers on this wise.

DEARLY beloved, ye have brought this Child here to be baptized; ye have prayed that our Lord Jesus Christ would vouchsafe to receive him, to release him from sin, to sanctify him with the Holy Ghost, to give him the kingdom of heaven, and everlasting life.
Dost thou, therefore, in the name of this Child, renounce the devil and all his works, the vain pomp and glory of the world, with all covetous desires of the same, and the sinful desires of the flesh, so that thou wilt not follow, nor be led by them?
Answer. I renounce them all; and, by God’s help, will endeavor not to follow, nor be led by them.

Minister. Dost thou believe all the Articles of the Christian Faith, as contained in the Apostles’ Creed?
Answer. I do.
Minister. Wilt thou be baptized in this Faith?
Answer. That is my desire.
Minister. Wilt thou then obediently keep God’s holy will and commandments, and walk in the same all the days of thy life?
Answer. I will, by God’s help.

Minister. Having now, in the name of this Child, made these promises, will ye also on your part take heed that he learn the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Ten Commandments, and all other things which a Christian ought to know and believe, to his soul’s health? Answer. I will, by God’s help.
Minister. Will ye take heed that this Child he brought to the Bishop to he confirmed by him, so soon as he is sufficiently instructed? Answer. I will, God being my helper.

Yes and I'm not religious at all. Just means my niece gets more crap from me on birthdays, Christmas, and Easter.

I like the concept of Godhusband better. Who the heck wants all the responsibilities of raising kids?

Proud to say I am not related by blood to any of my godchildren, and I was picked over blood brothers or brothers-in-law. I take the role seriously. My youngest goddaughter will call me Parrain thanks to her father but the rest call me Uncle LeonPhelps.

Yes.

Catholics welcome people if all faiths. Can't take communion or be a godfather though.

You can be a non-Catholic godparent as long as the other godparent is Catholic and the non Catholic is a baptized Christian.

The amount of misinformation in this thread for Catholic-filled South Louisiana is crazy

Correct. Godfather (or Godmother) is a cultural term. Officially you have one or two baptismal sponsors. If you remember the Capital Gang, Al Hunt was Bob Novak's.

Only one baptismal sponsor needs to be Catholic.

I was told (have mercy) by my wife who looked into it that while this is true, technically the child would only have one official godparent, the Catholic of the two; that the non-Catholic would not be listed on the official church documents.
