Yes.

You hangout and light some candles and shite at the Christening, have to buy extra presents on birthdays, Christmas, and Easter...and have to take the kid in in-case both the parents die.

No biggie...

I am twice over. Ones an adult now so i am clear.

The other has one grandmother who is so catholic that she might hold me to it and have me raise her grand-daughter.

Yes. You get to buy the kid presents and spoil him/her. If the parents die, you get the kid.

It's really fun, for the most part.

I'm not Catholic, so I was automatically taken out of the running for my nephew. His catholic uncle is very involved in the church, so it made more sense for him to be the godfather anyway.

For you, the baptism was last night? That seems a little odd. You do nothing unless you are actually religious. For most people it is nothing more than a title, and I think it is typical for godparents to never see their godchildren. You technically are supposed "to guide their growth in the Church." Have fun with that.

If Catholic, youre gonna have to take the class for the child's baptism. Outside of that, just spoil them and give them gifts for birthdays and Christmas. Both of my godchildren call me Paran.

This isn't true.

That may be how people choose, but the child is not legally the responsibility of the God parents if the parents die. The idea is they are the ones that make sure the child is raised in the ways of the church.

Im certainly not splitting up my kids if me and my wife die, and absolute I'll not be sending my oldest to live with my brother in law.

Yes. I'm known solely as Paran (Parrain) to my nephew.

Mostly providing guidance and support. He's grown up so he can handle himself.

I guess I can't read sarcasm in text, but you weren't the only one to say "you HAVE to take the kid if the parents die" and I guarantee people believe that to be the case.

Eta
Or was that a call out of my typo?

I assume that most of the people that chose to be a godparent, especially those of us from S. LA, understand what the role entails and take it pretty seriously in the very unlikely event that scenario takes place.

Is there a legal obligation, no. But I'm sure most everyone is willing to accept the moral obligation.
