Edit - also housing is way more than 30% higher. Maybe not in Stockton but in the nice parts of CA you could be looking at nominal housing prices that are triple what they are in BR and NO (outside uptown).

By 2/1 do you mean 2 br 1 bath? If so $2800 is very high for that in the Anaheim area.

The town I live in is a nice town in a perfect location in LA county. Less than a 1/2 mile to the beach and no crime. To buy a 2 bedroom move-in ready house is $1 million--and they only stay on the market for maybe 3 days. More often than not the seller gets more than the initial listing price.
It is insane. My family owns commercial and residential property here that was purchased years ago. It's crazy what it could be sold for now.

I do not make 3-4X for my job out here. I do make more but it's not a COL ratio difference.

There was an article out here last weekend that median rent for a 1/1 in the L.A. area is supposed to be just under $2000 within the next year.
My friend is looking at condos in Westwood, 1/1 900 square feet, $600K.

I live in the Central Valley and I recently priced what it would take yo move into LA county. I'm in an 1800 sq ft home now and busying at the seams with one kid. I bought the house new for 219 which is now listing for 268k. At a minimum, the only thing comparable was a new construction condo for 550k in Santa Clarita. The second option was semi valley for 600k.
Our career plans quickly changed after the sticker shock and we will be looking towards Denver as our next option when oil comes back up and starts hiring. We don't want to raise kids in LA county with a mortgage that size. I think southern Cali has got to see a population shift in the next 25 years due to housing prices. Our household income is over the 75th percentile and we cannot afford LA.

With prices being that high and wages (except for nurses) not following, I'd imagine a lot of the people out there are either upside-down or struggling with their notes and insurance

If you stayed in your home after the financial collapse, prices are around where they were. Most of the people I've heard of who went bankrupt were the people who took out an arm for a spec house and couldn't afford the payments after the teaser rates. These were doctors and lawyers investing in the housing market and lost everything.

The apartments my family owns are small 2/2. They rent them for $1900. The nice 3 bedroom house is $3200.
And for the most part, wages do not correspond to the high housing costs. My wife is an RN and does not make a ton more in CA than she did in OK. Somewhere around $10-15 an hour more. That's it.

Nothing spectacular. Just a mid-1920s place that got renovated a few years ago to look farm house old school style. It doesn't blow me away or anything. Like I said earlier, these houses aren't much different than my house. A quarter of them don't even have A/C or alarms, but still command high prices

So it's generally more expensive than the surrounding areas? That would make a little more sense if so, but there didn't seem to be many formal places of business there when I went
