Nurse, that's what I was asking. Now I'm wondering if it's like that across the board since the work is no different

other factors, Union and such

True, nursing unions there made it law that nurses HAVE to be paid overtime anytime they work more than 8 hours. Knowing that most nurses in hospital settings work 12 hour shifts.

My husband's company has one of their corporate offices in CA and we would move in a heartbeat if the opportunity presented itself. CA is the best state to work as a nurse (pay, benefits, working conditions, etc).

Do yall California people actually make 3-4x more wages than down here for the same job?

Not everything is 3-4x more expensive. Housing, and gas is like 30% more than most places, but other than that almost everything is the same.

What an asinine statement. What manner of convoluted, irrational interpretative failure could possibly have lead you into assuming that I meant such a thing? Sometimes following that embarrassing feeling about openly displaying our stupidity is a good thing.

Yeah but they normally move to a place that still gives them easy access to CA when they want. I've never met anyone here that moved from CA that said they absolutely hated living there. They all say they loved CA, just couldn't afford to live there and live the lifestyle they wanted there anymore.

Maybe in the ghetto?

ETA: I see that he actually lives in Metairie, that explains it.

Nah. Hipsters from New York and California love those areas.

You can find some homes for 172K in city limits, it would be in a less than desirable area, though.

Historically speaking, you will whether you like it or not.

So what's better, to be part of the movement and steer it in a more amicable direction, or to be completely against it and later then forced to adopt whatever "they" decide?

If I'm not mistaken that is the case with all California labor laws. Overtime is accrued on a daily basis based on the average work week (5 8-hr days). When I was there we were working 4 10-hr days and getting paid for 32 hours of straight time and 8 hours of overtime @ 1.5x pay, so 44 hours of pay for 40 hours of work.

I wasn't complaining, but it seemed like a goofy policy.

Sales tax in Los Angeles is lower than Baton Rouge.

Not sure, just always had nurse friends tell me about the OT laws in regards to nursing.

Working conditions in general are better there. My little brother was working a low wage job in San Francisco as a dishwasher(low wage there still pays like $12-13/hr). He hurt his back at work and CA workmans comp totally took care of him. All his medical care taken care of including PT and even frequent massage therapy for his back.

Which is why I enjoy state's rights. You want to have exorbitant state income taxes and cost of living, then you better offset it with benefits or else people will get up and move. There is always a trade-off, and CA residents know what that trade-off is going to be.

Also, we're leaving out the fact that money from outside the state of California buys up property there as well.

Not many tycoons from China or Russia want to buy a house in Louisiana for the views.

Yep, regular Los Angelenos get pushed out by all-cash Chinese buyers. So they move to Bywater where they think $400K for a lead paint-ridden 3/2 is a "steal." Which causes the New Orleanians to move to St. Charles Parish. Where those people move I have no clue.
