Radiology, ophthalmology, anesthesiology and dermatology.

Or are those days gone?

What do you mean by best? Salary or lifestyle?

OMFS guys have it made IMO, but it's an art no doubt.

Derm is great tho, it's one of 3 things.

1. Increase moisturizer to help rash
2. Decrease moisturizer to help rash
3. You need to see an allergist

You can probably replace Radiology with Radiation Oncology. Anesthesiology is facing encroachment by midlevel providers. Opthalmology starting salaries aren't great in desirable places. Dermatology has a great lifestyle but that type of practice is not for everyone.

There is no perfect specialty in medicine.

As an ophthalmologist, I am very happy with my choice.

I know an anesthesiologist who opened a chain of weight loss clinics. Makes a shite ton of money.

Emergency medicine and PM&R both have a work life balance that's rated top 5 fwiw, with PM&R being #1. I just matched EM and am very happy with my decision. It's going to be pretty nice working 10-12 days a month and pulling 350k+ per year. #notsosubtlebrag

Any specialist Doctor is still doing very well. The general practitioners and internal medicine and general surgeons are the ones suffering (relatively at least, it's not like they're homeless)

EM is a bubble in medicine. There's no way anyone can enjoy a specialty where nurses start/do your work up, you only rule out a few things and you deal with the dregs of society. Wait until you start working, it's not normal/sustainable to have a schedule that constantly changes. PM&R may have a good lifestyle but who actually wants to do what they do?

I enjoy the hell out of it. EM docs are some of the happiest around. Burnout rates are no higher than in other specialties. And you have a very myopic view of EM if you think that that is what it's all about.

As far as the schedule goes, I hate the idea of a 9-5. I love night shifts. And it's pretty great being able to work less than two weeks out of the month and have the rest of that time to relax and enjoy life, travel, etc. You aren't pinned down in any one location, and it's the most in demand specialty right now because it's a money maker for the hospital.

To quote the neurosurgeon I recently saw about a disk issue, "EM? Best specialty in all of medicine."

Also, not having call is awesome. I'm not a big fan of 12 hour shifts, but a lot of docs are. And not every hospital does 12s. A lot do 10s or 8s.

Plenty of people, apparently. Same question can be asked for many specialties. Who wants to deal with nasty vaginas 24/7? Not me, but lots of people still go into Ob.

God, you are awful. Everything you post is an assumption based on your own shitty and pretentious opinion. Clearly there are people who enjoy EM and I highly doubt that what your described as EM is what goes on every day in the profession - especially since you wouldn't know because it's obvious you aren't in EM. Just because you did well and matched into a highly competitive residency doesn't automatically make you the foremost expert on the ins and outs of all forms of practice.

Given that computers will be able to interpret cross-sectional imaging studies with a high degree of efficiency and celerity within the next 10-20 years, I would advise any MS4 to elect any field other than radiology.

What did he match into? Gen surg? Which specialty has the most egoistic, condescending assholes?

ETA: It appears he may be a 28 year old ortho resident who is already burned out and considering a career change. Might explain the shitty attitude.

If you can deal with the mangled bodies and addicts trying to scam you out of their next fix.
