to take the kids up there in the next year or so and I'm debating early summer or Thanksgiving week.
Mostly want to do outdoor stuff like hiking, canoe/rafting, zipline, etc.

And yes, I understand it's trashy and all of that good stuff.

Most of the outdoor stuff will be too cold for kids. And, it's always crowded. I can't imagine what it would be on a week long kid vacation.

I'd imagine the weather would be a lot nicer in early Summer as opposed to late November. I'd imagine you'd freeze your arse off doing a zipline in Nov.

Went there for Thanksgiving a few years back.....absolutely it was very overcrowded . Beautiful area and it could be cool at a less busy time of year but everyone had the same idea.

We were there for thanksgiving last year. it was very crowded but not to thd point of just being too much. One odd thing I noticed was thd number of LSU fans we saw. It was to the pont I started wondering if there was some sort of huge LSU reunion going on or something.

Been many times with my kids. Go early summer. The earlier in summer you go. The less crowded will be.

I was there between Christmas and New Years last year. It was a complete clusterf***. It would take 20 minutes to get through the little town because traffic was so bad. The best time we had was when we drove through the mountains to Asheville.

Take my advice...GO IN SUMMER and not around a holiday.

Growing up we went all of the time for thanksgiving. I always enjoyed it.

We went for thanksgiving a few years back and it was very crowded but the kids had a lot of fun. Hiking trails were fairly crowded too. Traffic around Cade's cove was thick and slow moving. The weather was really nice up until the last two days, temps went from 50's all week to low 20's.

Not as crowded as October or after Christmas. 60s during day some. Snow hit or miss. Plenty to do. Most places open to eat too on thanksgiving. And the lights are all up.

Ok. I will pass on going for thanksgiving then. I don't do crowds well.
Thanks for the responses folks

Can't comment on Thanksgiving week, as I've never been there in November. Have, though, been 4 times during the summer. Other's comments about it always being crowded really depends on what you're trying to do. My family does a lot of hiking, and I have rarely been on a trail that I would characterize as "crowded". Some certainly have more people on them than others....but never crowded. My experience is that Downtown Gatlinburg is always crowded at night. Dollywood usually has some pretty decent crowds, but I've never felt overwhelmed by them. White water rafting on the Little Pigeon River (probably not something you'd do in November) has its share of crowds, as there are numerous livery outfits serving the same input site. Again, really depends on what you're doing in Gatlinburg. My family goes to enjoy the outdoors and trails, and we've never been disappointed because of too many people.

If you just want to do outdoor stuff and be away from the crowds, find a cabin around Townsend. It's always less busy, has its own entry into the park. Can take the Wears Valley into Pigeon Forge or River Road to Gatlinburg.

In all honesty though, western NC offers some better outdoors opportunities without the tourist trap nonsense.

It's a crowded time but it's a fun place to have thanksgiving imo.

Most of the people calling it trashy rarely travel anyways.

I was in Pigeon Forge yesterday. Weather was fantastic, sunny and not cold at all. Crowds were light. Rooms are cheap up until Thanksgiving Day. That's when the crowds show up. If you leave on Wednesday or Thanksgiving day, you can avoid the crowds.

There's a 10 state youth football tournament there every year (ages 9-14). La always has teams there.
