Worked as a customer rep for Pepsi back in the late 90s. My job was 5.5% commission of my sales. That particular job was feast or famine depending on the season of the year. Folks just don't drink as much in the winter months. So if its seasonal prepare for the down times of the year.

If it involves routes or territories consider that as well. With my job some routes were substantially more lucrative than others. I hated that particular job but it did allow me to make 50K per year as a 19 year old....which I completely pissed away:)

Good luck

I dont work in sales but in my position I work with reps that are 100% commission. Its cutt throat and if they have two bad quarters they are out. That can go for any sales job though so you need to have money put away in case you go a few months with out work. You have to hustle and be on call a lot because every sale counts.
Most in those positions have been in sales a long time and actually worked towards the goal of being on straight commission. They make six figure salaries and are confident in their ability to only eat what they kill. I would stay away from a sales job that pays straight commision for a entry level position.

Commish sales can be very good or very bad.. Depends on you..
If you're driven, organized and don't mind people telling you(or hell no) a lot...Then you'll be fine

But! also remember to factor in that benefits are typically not included and find a good financial advisor.

I would never take a commission only job at the outset.

But, my SO's brother recently took a job that was salaried and commission, and after performing pretty well was offered a commission-only arrangement and is making quite a bit more money than previously.

My advice would be to get a draw for the first three months that covers at least your basic living expenses, make sure there is no cap on your commissions and most importantly bust your arse.

Why am I not surprised

I'm gonna be a good friend and not bring this up anywhere on the Rant

And I'm pushing industrial machinery for straight commission......I would never look back

I was given no leads and no customers to start. Scary at first but the rewards....

Did it in wine/liquor sales out of college, straight 4%. Feast and famine.

Overall it was just good experience that led to a great job.

Car salesman and real estate agents are straight commission arent they?

Some are some aren't. My brother is a real estate agent in Florida who is currently commission only. He used to be salary plus commission, but felt he was paying the company too much out of his commissions and not really getting anything out of it.

We need to talk then! You also do service and rentals? Have an idea on the heavy EQ rental front that needs to be beta'd. Could be very lucrative for the right outfit.

You didn't specify what type of work. What industry?

I'm base plus commission w/ benefits-no complaints

Ask questions-you should be closing all during the interview anyway. Previous guy made what? What's a top rep make in company? Could you ride along with a top rep? What's retention rate in company? Are you taking over an established account?
