I am a teacher and the JROTC (Civil Air Patrol) instructor at my school and I am thinking of joining the national guard. Once out of basic I would then go to OCS and become an officer. I am 34 so I would have to join before I turn 35 or I would need a waiver.

My wife and I are both teachers and I am worried that our teacher retirement wont be enough when we retire. Plus, I am scared to think what the cost of healthcare will be in 20 years.

Anyone else do something similar or have any advice?

My thoughts...
- Save your $1 bills for toilet paper.
- Enjoy Ukraine.

No National Guard experience, (Only can speak from AD perspective) but if you are a 34 year old (35 after OCS and Schooling) I just wouldn't recommend it. Especially, since your primary motivator is money... find a hobby and make some extra cash from it.

Unless you are used to the extreme structure and chain-of-command culture, it's a culture shock for anyone (Much less a middle-aged baw)

Just my 2 cent, maybe Guard is different.

I say go for it if it interests you. Get your commission, serve whatever minimal required time you might have incurred, and then decide if you want to stick with it after that. Don't be a guy who looks back and wishes he had tried it. Be a guy who looks back and is glad he took a chance on something, whether it works out in the long run or not.

Worst case you get in better shape and own a military rank that no one can take from you.

You’re not going to basic then OCS. If you do it, commission out of the gate or enjoy your enlisted brethren. Either way, it’s not what you think it is, so enjoy each drill for the next 6 years.

I can't imagine being in my mid 30s doing basic training with a bunch of 18 year olds.

wouldn't have to do much of that if he already had a specialty like a doc, lawyer, AI maybe, but then again he probably wouldn't be looking into going into the guard, although it happens

I did it at 27. No regrets.
Did Basic at Benning which at the time was a blessing.
I prepared physically for Basic and it was sad to see all those 18 year olds that were skinnier than me that couldn't run near as fast/far as me.
One deployment to Afghanistan.
You can go straight to OCS after AIT. Talk with your recruiter/future unit and pick a short AIT but also one you can live with if OCS doesn't work out.

As a teacher it would probably work out for you schedule wise. My dad stayed in the National Guard until he was 60 and he enjoyed the breaks from his regular job. He is also enjoying having two pensions.
Of course you will have to get over being older than a lot of others but age can also be an advantage at times.

When you get taken out in Ukraine a few years from now, it will definitely solve the retirement problem.

This is one of the best jobs to have a side hustle hobby job.

I would absolutely not do National Guard for the pay or benefits. IMO its not worth it. Serving and the other aspects of the job would be a different story.

Do you not have good benefits as a teacher in retirement? I think you are a heck of a lot better hustling a job at home.

I was active duty Marines so not sure about the guard but you say you're worried about the price of healthcare. I'm not exactly sure what the differences are but reserve/guard members don't get as many of the VA benefits as active duty unless you are activated for something like an Iraq or Afghanistan type deal. Are you wanting to join for the benefits also?

As far as boot camp or OCS and your age, as long as you prepare physically you'll be fine and probably do much better mentally than the 18-20 years olds simply because well, you aren't 18-20 years old and much more mature and can handle stressful situations better. Only thing to worry about would be a 24 year old telling you what to do and how to do it. If you can get over that part you'd be fine.

Also, don't know if you have kids or ages if you do but that one weekend a month will probably always fall on a weekend they have baseball etc and you'd have to miss it. One weekend a month doesn't sound all that bad but you have to remember it will be for 6 years you will be doing it along with the summer training.

That's what I was saying. I have a friend that does Navy Reserves and he is gone A LOT. It doesn't seem like a lot and teachers get a lot of time off so I'm sure your schedule would ultimately be fine. But its not easy I can tell you.
