Well you can never really fly anywhere but pretty close to it if you have CFI with you. With Vegas, you have Class B, Nellis, Area 51, high population (anti-terrorism protocols) and then multiple restricted air spaces near Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, etc. There is also probably the highest concentration of commercial sight-seeing tours in the U.S. Basically you are lowest on totem pole and at any time you can be told to GTFO or even have your comm's jammed by Air Force/Area 51 operations. Several times we were redirected and told to fly in a certain direction straight and level. I had visual on couple of instances and it was fighter jets moving through the area. Of course Class B has its own fun of not getting runover or pissing off a commercial plane.
When I flew out of North Las Vegas I had ~10hours and had not yet soloed. They did not require classroom time because I was also paying for CFI.
Subtle brag #2: LAS (Mccarran Airport) has a high number of retirement flight destinations for commercial pilots. One trip from Vegas I was on retitement flight and the pilot received clearance to deviate the 9000MSL restriction over Grand Canyon. We banked back and forth over the canyon at probably 2000-3000 AGL. The pilot had cockpit door open the entire time (surprising post-9/11) and it was a giant party with everyone except the pilot boozing it up. I signed his retirement card and took a picture with the entire flight. The fire trucks foam down the plane upon arrival. Pretty bad arse experience.

I have my PPL. Took lessons at KNEW with Gulf Coast Aviation. Not sure where you are, but any airport with have a flight school an offer a "discovery flight" which is under $100 and is basically a 30-45 minute flight where you get a little stick time in the air.
If your dad likes it great, but it is not for everyone. If he does like it, expect to spend at least $10,000 for the license between everything.

My private and instrument are on my bucket list. Once I finish up with my scuba certs (just going to Advanced, maybe Master Diver) and once I pay that down...I'll start on my private. I've know the guy who will be my CFI for 15 years (just hope he don't retire...but he's not much older than me so I doubt it).

What area are you in--BR? NOLA? I'm sure we can help steer you toward a reputable school or independent CFI.

Talk to people in your local aviation community about instructors and operators. If you have names, get opinions on them. Maybe former students.
Absolutely must like your instructor's personality, it makes learning so much easier. There are different types of instructors and not all of them are pleasant.
Ask about price, short term and long term.
Get the N-number (tail #) of the aircraft(s) you will be using. Research the history of the airframe on the internet.

Off topic- I have about 30 hours of flying from 10ish years ago and never finished. Are these hours still good?

Yes your hours are still valid. But your CFI will still have to sign you off to 1) solo and 2) do your checkride. But they will count towards the 30 dual / 10 solo requirement for your PPL.
I got my PPL at KNEW in 2003 with Air Reldan, which moved to the north shore. I have used Gulf Coast Aviation for BFRs and IPCs over the years and their instructors seem pretty good.

Anyone here have their recreational pilots license? If so is it worth it. I've heard if you can't pass your medical its the route to go. And its much cheaper.

Depending on plane it could be really loud.
If hes a bit hard of hearing consider that with people you talk to.
When i got lessons, the plane was quiet, easy to understand the instructor.
Maybe they will have headsets.
Ask. Modern living. Bose/bluetooth.

Guy Faget if he is still active is an excellent instructor in BR, people at LA Aircraft will probable know how to find him. Not that it is relevant, but his father was a very famous NASA engineer.

If you have records.
If you've gotten that far, you should at least do one flight a year to keep on top of it.
