For those who don't know- The Mississippi Aerial River Transit, or simply MART, was a gondola lift transport system spanning the Mississippi River. The Worlds Fair thread had me looking on Wiki about the NO Fair and I saw this.

I was only like 5 at the time, but I distinctly remember riding it a few times. It was awesome.

I was in fifth grade, and I remember one of my teachers talking about how we really needed to get our parents to take us because we would probably never have an event like that so close to home again.

My parents would not take me.

I rode it a bunch, lived in Algiers.

Never got a chance to do this, was too young, but people used to line up so they could be in the gondola when they did the nightly fireworks.

Yep and it was scary as hell as a kid. It was there for a while until the Coast Guard shut it down in the early 90's.

I rode it with my girlfriend. We parked on the West Bank and rode it into the fair. Scared her so bad she made me hire a taxi to get back to my car.

Didn't it stay in operation even after the Fair, for a little while?

My one trip, my friends kept trying to open the fricking door, since they knew I am afraid of heights. Damn thing would open about a foot and a half wide. Scared the shite out of me.

Yeah, I was on it one night for the fireworks show. You could look down and see the fireworks below you.
