My brother was in a bad accident last Saturday night and broke his neck. He is lucky to be alive.

He had surgery and the doctors said everything went well. He is currently still in ICU and on a ventilator. They wake him up once a day and turn off the vent to make him breathe on his own.

The longest he has breathed on his own was for 2 hours, but the last couple of days he only lasted 15-20 minutes. He is now fighting pneumonia.

He is able to move his arms and has feeling in his upper legs so we still don't know if he will ever be able to walk again.

I am worried that if he is on the ventilator for too long, he will become dependent of it. Not sure if that is a thing?

Update page 4. He passed 12/22/23

Just looking at the film and knowing nothing else, his spinal cord is probably severed and he will likely be on a vent long term. Best of luck, I hope I’m wrong.

God damn. That is tragic as hell.

Sending prayers in hopes that he gets better. I'm so sorry.

Sorry that happened. Hope he recovers with minimal long-term issues.

This is a horrific injury. Bilateral facet dislocations and 100% displacement of C6 on C7 with likely near complete cord injury. Honestly surprised he has any sensory function in his lowers. That CT slice screams complete cord injury. This is going to be an extremely prolonged recovery and likely never complete recovery.

People rarely ever do. I'm convinced at least 60% of the posters here just can't read.

My buddy did. Had surgery and had to walk around for a long time with one of those halos that they drill to your skull. He fully recovered.

Not me, but I had a friend in HS who got rear-ended and broke a couple of her cervical vertebrae. She was temporarily paralyzed, nearly died, was on the ventilator and had a long road of PT and recovery. She missed nearly an entire year of school but came back normal and was even able to go back to cheering her senior year. So it's possible to get back to normal.

Hope everything works out for your brother.

He must be a warrior to survive that Coot. God isn’t finished with him yet. Praying he makes a great recovery

I’m no expert but from that film that looks to be an almost “internal decapitation”. He’s lucky to be alive with a neck injury that severe.

This is a C6/7 injury so Phrenic nerve to the diaphragm should be spared. Hopefully since it’s a lower cervical injury he has a good chance of respiratory recovery.

He is able to nod his head up and down and left and right. He shakes hands and my mom said he wriggled his toes, but no one else saw the toe movement.

It truly is a miracle he survived.
