Are they difficult to train? I understand that they become very attached to their owners. I like this, but do they attack strangers? How big have you seen them get?

Any other advice appreciated.

They look like this:

I think a lot of people get their ears cropped:

One of my best friends had one. It was a great dog. It scared the frick out of people with the loud low bark, but it was lazy as shite and a big teddy bear that you could do anything to it and it wouldn't move. Unfortunately it got cancer at about 5 years old and they had to put him down. He was really attached to my friends wife though.

They weren't very good dog trainers, it didn't know any tricks, but it never made a mess inside. I am not sure of it's ability to be trained beyond house training since that is all they really did.

edit: they didn't crop the ears

Interesting

So, do you think would it make a good guard dog in the house?

Friend of mine has two... Brother and sister, 3-4 years old, the boy is about 130lbs, girl 90ish lbs.

They're extremely friendly but can be a hassle simply because of their size. They've never acted aggressive as long as I've known them, but I wouldn't want to be the burglar breaking into his house.

fricking huge and quick. One of his used to fill up the whole rear sliding window of my truck with his head.

His would have been an effective visual deterrent, but if anyone got close it wouldn't of been. It was a big ole dog with a big bark, but the dog never meant a stranger it didn't want to lick everywhere and get belly rubs. I am sure if someone would of attacked my friend or his wife, the dog would of sprung into action, but just on his own he wouldn't hurt a flea.

People's kids climbed all over the dog and the dog would just lay there and pretty much go to sleep.

That's not ears cropped, that's cut off completely. Wow.

Hmmm, I'm liking everything that I'm hearing. I'm not too worried about the size, as you and mxs1998 have stated.

I really like the sound of this.

Yea, I was thinking the same thing. A lot of the pictures look like that, though. I would never do anything to the ears. I don't know why people do.

I think it goes back to fighting. Many get them docked and make sure the tail is docked for sure. otherwise you will have a massive whip on the back of them, that knocks everything over.

size is really the only downside. great dog Friends males are around 120-150, his are big. He has a platinum colored one, not sure if thats the correct terminology, that was 90lbs at 6 months

I get leery when I see posts like this.

Are you wanting because you think they are badass ?

Have you ever owned a large dog ?

Have you considered what the food and vet care bill may be ?

My neighbour has 2 and a GSP.

The Corso is one scary looking dog but it's a sweetie. It will bark at you but if you just walk up to it it's a submissive dog. This is for both. The GSP is scary as hell to me.

Great dogs but like all bully-ish breeds, their personality, in terms of other animals, can change drastically around 3 yrs old, especially females.

I would never buy anything just because I thought it looked badass.

I have always liked big dogs. I want a dog that is extremely loyal to its owners and could help protect my SO and future kids when I am away.

ETA: Also, the fact that it is a short haired dog makes think the shedding would be easier to handle.

I took care of my boxer growing up until it passed away when I was in college. I then adopted a dog on my own when I was when in college. This is when learned the true "price" of a dog, the amount of time and literal cost. I realized I wasn't prepared. I knew someone who wanted the dog and gave it to them for free. This was about 4 or 5 years ago. I am doing all my research before I even start the process of thinking about getting a dog (one reason for this thread).

Doberman or a GSP. Dobies weren't the "devil dogs" for nothing. I don't know enough about rottweiler's but they look mean as hell. The only one I've ever spent time with was HUGE.

As long as you do your research, which I'm sure you have, you'll be fine. Good luck.

I have experience. They get really attached to the male in the family. You must socialize from an early age or a potential lawsuit awaits you down the road. They are wary of anyone outside the immediate family but early socialization and a strong hand will help immensely. If (as a puppy) he growls at you or shows any sign of toy aggression, you must plant him on his back hard and say NO! You are not the dog whisperer, be the Alpha and your Cane should do fine. Do not get a Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu, or a Presa Canario for your first attempt at owning a man stopper. They (Cane's) are very cool dogs indeed and live about 10 years in good health. Buy the best dog food you can and supplement with fish oil to ensure the joints and hips stay mobile and helps him/her age gracefully. I went to a kennel in New Jersey that had 150 lib Cane's that looked more like a cross with a Neo. They can get that big but at 130 lbs are very very impressive. They are awesome animals, enjoy!

A GSP really? I never though about those.

Yea, a rottweiler lives down my street. It's GIGANTIC. They have an invisible fence around their entire yard. When you walk in front of the house, it runs towards you at 100 miles per hour but stops right short of being able to touch you because it doesn't cross that invisible line.

This is a myth, sometimes short hairs shed much much worse than long haired dogs.
