Anyone ever travel abandoned section of Hwy 87?

I don't think there's much of a road remaining anymore. Texas Highway department closed it down in 1990. Just curious if anyone has ever tried the trek and what it was like.

Don't do it without a 4x4 and possibly some blinders.

We aren't all old.

Yes. I am posting while driving on it right now.

I did. I don't remember what year. It might have been 1999 when I went from B. R. to Austin, and took a side trip to Galveston. There was no nude beach yet (at least I didn't see anything).
The closed section of the road started out ok but steadily got worse. After a while, there really WAS no road. I was basically travelling cross-country. The water was to my left and a barbed-wire fence was to my right. I just hoped the tide didn't start coming in and become a serious threat (although it may have been high tide already - I didn't know). Eventually, I started driving on a rough semblance of a road, and it got steadily better as I approached High Island.
It was a dumb thing to do, especially since I was in a car and not a 4 wheel drive. I would imagine the "road" is even worse now.

About a mile past the nude beach, there is a sunken shrimp boat not far from the beach that had some phenomenal fishing. It has been over 10 years since I have been that way so I don't know if it is still visible from the beach. Just make sure you get back to the highway before dark. If you find yourself on the wrong side of the nude beach as the sun goes down, some sights can't be unseen.

Are nude beaches even legal in Texas?

Hippy Hollow in Austin has been around for many years. As far as legal, it is a very gray area. It pretty much depends on what the police want to enforce. In Galveston county, it is illegal to go topless only if there is a complaint. That's why many young ladies can bee seen sans top along the beaches of Bolivar Peninsula. That's how it used to be years ago anyway. It has been many moons since I have been to those beaches. As far as the nude beach is concerned, it is technically illegal but the police usually don't bother anyone down there if they all behave and there are no complaints. It is very secluded so they just let it be.

I drove it last year in my Jeep.
I started on the Texas side and passed several folks hanging out nude once I was about a mile in. I just focused on driving and gave them a wave as I passed.
There isn't a road at all anymore and it got very precarious at points. I was solo and wouldn't do it again without other vehicles. Getting stuck out there would not have been good.
There is a road in the wildlife management area that I had to use at one point due to a lot of debris on the beach. I heard the US Fish and Wildlife cops will write you a ticket if they catch you on that road though I didn't see any.

I think it's a "jeep people" thing now. Keep clubs etc. but even then you may lose an axle. I went a little ways in a car YEARS ago.
Just a forgotten area. I can't imagine what crap washed up out there with Ike. And what it did to an already destroyed "road".
But yes. I've heard it all. Nude beaches. Also good for shooting from what I hear. Nobody for miles. And if you shoot toward the water there is nobody around for 20-2000 miles.

So, how do all the nekkid people get to their beach?

Most of the ones I saw had 4x4 trucks or Jeeps. There's no way a car could make it past the first few hundred feet anymore.
Here's the one photo I could find of the beginning section where the newer asphalt was all broken up. When I was there two years ago this section was still passable in a car.

For those not local, what's the story behind this highway being abandoned?

When I was researching the Drive I found this site with some info: LINK

It washed out repeatedly. I believe with Bonnie and Alicia. They gave up.
Sea Rim Park was out there but little else. It was just THE WAY to get to Crystal Beach (Bolivar) without going to Winnie.
Look at the pic posted. It's beyond patching a road. It would have to be moved inland a few 100 yards. As it sat it's now part of the beach.

I'm actually going to be driving down Hwy 87 in a few hours (for the first time ever).

What kind of vehicle are you taking?
If you get to any large sections of sargassum I'd get out and make sure there aren't any big rocks or debris under it. One year that stuff was about ten feet thick from the water to the sand.
