Yes, sometimes they hook our car up to one of their trains

how much are tickets to Chicago?
It can vary, but most of the time over $200

You could have probably bought a plane ticket for <$200 to Chicago, though.
From what I understand, you don't take a train because it is cheaper. You take a train because you prefer that mode of transportation.
ETA: For a ticket leaving tomorrow from NOLA to Chicago, it is $250 for "flexible" seating and $437 for "premium" or what seems to be a room. Those seem to be the 2 highest out of 4 price levels.

We did Bham to NO several years ago. Only a couple hours longer than driving it and way cheaper. By the time I paid for gas and hotel parking it was cheaper than driving. And easier to eat and drink and rest on the way. The only thing that sucked was having to leave at 7 am on the way home. If we ever go to NO again it will be on Amtrak.

Definitely pack your booze. A great way to relax on the rails. Did NOLA to Jackson years ago and did not get the memo about bringing a cooler. Took it in the northeast a couple of times since. Not a bad way to travel.

If you have your own cabin you are going to love it. I slept like a baby and enjoyed the scenery all the way from El Paso to New Orleans

If you don't have sleepers, get there early & grab seats in the middle of the car. The rocking motion is horrible the closer to a door you get. Too, don't sit in any coach next to the bar, as everyone beyond your coach will tromp past you, coming and going from the bar. Forget about sleeping if you are not in a sleeper. All those rail road crossings you pass while driving? Amtrack stops at every one of them. We flew back from Chicago.

DC to NYC
NYC to Boston
RIchmond to DC
Its aight. A lot more charm than a bus. You can pretend that you are on the Hogwarts Express.

2 years ago took Amtrak from Tampa to Colombia SC to watch the Tigers and the Cocks. Was a great trip with the exception the train from Colombia was delayed coming in by an accident on the tracks somewhere up the line so we got home early Monday morning instead of late Sunday night. Spent most of the time in the lounge car but had pretty comfy seats in the car we were in so was able to work in a little nap. It's a cool experience but if you need to get somewhere in a hurry look for a flight.

Anyone ever taken an amtrack train?
Yep. And I put it back when I was finished…
:rimshot:
I rode on one years ago from Richmond, VA to Washington DC and it was cool. Food was mediocre but the scenery was nice. It was something different and interesting.

Ride Amtrak all the time traveling north out of and back to DC. I use the Acela mostly but the Regional Trains riding in Business Class are fine too.
You are going to have a problem every now and then - but planes are late for weather or mechanical problems and highways are jammed due to accidents or construction.
Overall, it's a nice, quick and efficient way to travel.
All that said, I've never done an overnight trip in the middle part of the country but have friends who've done so and they've had positive feedback.

Yes the train ride itself was not bad it's just long and cost about the same as an airline ticket if it's long distance. The only bad part was the MANY stops and occasionally it got really full.
24 hour ride from Tuscaloosa to NYC
You'd def want a sleeper if long distance

I took one from NOLA to DC. Worst trip ever. They were supposed to give me a sleeper car, but I got a regular seat instead. Between the guy behind me who was going up to Boston to see if his girlfriend was cheating on him and the overweight sleeping lady next to me with the jimmy leg, I spent most of my time in the drinking car.
I was also absolutely filthy when I got off the train. I'm surprised I didn't contract something.

In college I took one from Los Angeles to Lake Charles. Took freaking forever as it stopped constantly at different stations.

Now i'm an old fart, married with kids.My wife will never get the story but may pass along to my son one day
