I traded in a vehicle in 2015. It was later sold to a wholesaler with my license plate on it and while still registered to me. Several month later it is involved in an accident with no insurance
Here I am over a year later getting calls from collection and trying to get my suspended license reinstated due to some dumb frick
I know some car dealers are on here. How in the hell does something like this happen

I think I'd be making a call to the dealer and chewing some arse

Perhaps the dumb frick that didn't take his plate and turn it in?

Not being an arse but why would you leave the plate on it?

This is on you. You take the plates with you and in some states you can even have them sign a form of the transfer.

As long as you have the bill of sale when you traded it in, you are not at fault for anything after. Simply go show them the form.

Everything at the dmv is simple

Seriously you are supposed to take your plates off of your car/truck when you trade it in at a dealership?
I have never done this nor had any problems after, but I usually buy my cars from friends that work at dealerships.

I asked them when I was getting my things out of it and they said they handle all of that. Even if that's not how it works, how can they sell a vehicle that is not registered to them? They have to have some responsibility for this right?

Yes.
Every car I have ever sold I personally take the plate off.
Not being an arse, but to avoid your scenario

Anyone here that says it's your fault is just as stupid as their answer.
Yes. 100% the car dealers fault. You will need a copy of our bill of sale and show that to whomever needs it.

Dealer is responsible to turn in plates, bet it was an All Star dealer lol. Kill the dealer

You should keep your old license plate when you trade a vehicle in, or have it moved onto the new vehicle.

never leave your plate on the vehicle for starters

Just spoke with the dealership. The plate was turned in by them. Vehicle was sold to a wholesaler who never re titled it. Some guy from from S. Iberia drives the truck and gets in a wreck. The cop that works the wreck runs the VIN and it comes back to the last registered owner which is me. My name gets put on the accident report as the owner and now Insurance and collections are coming to me for their money

They shouldn't be able to. They would send a swat team to bust your arse if they found out you were trying to sell a boat that's not registered in your name.

Umm...once it was no longer yours why would you still have it registered in your name? With the damn plate on it to boot.
