I think its one of those jobs that can attract pedos because it gives them access to kids. If that makes sense.

When I was in junior high, our youth minister was clearly queer. Gave me the creeps.

I'm in the audience. He's literally participating in the play with the children.

I never liked these types of speeches. Kids end up interpreting it as "It's Ok to do whatever I want and just turn back to god and be forgiven later."

I grew up with several youth ministers, none who were pedos. Then again, I'm Baptist.

Seriously, I'm sure that there are some out there. If you're a parent, just be observant and responsible. Talk to the other kids if you're suspicious.

"Many pedophiles are extremely clever, often charming, patient people, frequently thought of as among the most valued of community members. That's because they spend a lot of time grooming the parents, friends and neighbors of the children around them, just as they groom the kids themselves. It's not unusual for pedophiles to pick careers and / or volunteer positions that will deliberately place them in close proximity to the youngsters they crave. They'll then proceed to impress (or "groom") the adults around them by becoming the most reliable on-call volunteer, the most generous friend, the most giving neighbor or the favorite relative. Their presentation makes them seem to be completely sincere, among the most trustworthy and valuable community members. Parents of molested kids will often be shocked at their own naivety, but pedophiles are as clever as can be in grooming the adults around them, too."

They all seem to be former drug addicts and alcoholics and channel their addiction towards saving people who are barely legal.

That's wrong to say that. And I HATE abusers.

I'm not calling out Baptists, just trying to point out that it isn't exclusively a Catholic issue.

Idk about Pedos, but pretty much everyone super-involved with teen and young adult Christian groups is creepy.

I'm not saying all teenagers and young adults who are devout Christians are weirdos, the vast majority aren't, but those involved with the groups give off strange vibes.

YoungLife is a good example. fricking freaks.

coaches

two of my coaches went to prison for variations on taboo behaviors with students.

one talked about his wife swapping in a high school class he was teaching me and my fellow students.
he circulated horrific photo books of devastating injuries, and material I didn't actually see to everyone in study hall. you could have more/different if you asked. I didn't get to page 10 of the first one.

by and by he was caught having BDSM relationships with students of both sexes.

the other was a sadist.

both are in prison. I was really glad when the sadist was stopped.

Yeah this started or came around Baton Rouge when I was in high school and of course every kid in school wanted to be involved because it was a meeting from like 6-9 on a Wednesday night.

Homework? Nah mom...big young life meeting tonight.

The guy running it knocked up a junior cheerleader who left school to have the baby and we never saw her again.

Well guess that's one youth minister who wasn't gay.

Not a youth minister, but when I was a kid there was an adult about 25 who helped, was around a lot, and he creeped me out. Forgot all about him for 30 years and then he pops up in the news. Arrested as a pedophile.

You have to watch who you let around your kids and if you're an adult who works with kids, you best always make sure that there is always at least one adult present for your own protection.

Yes, but my perception is admittedly skewed. I knew two youth pastors who are now registered sex offenders.

That's because the whole charade is contrived and the very definition of fitting square pegs into round holes. You can't try THAT hard to defy the natural maturation process and make it come off as normal. It's IMPOSSIBLE to give 13 year olds a talk about the evils of masturbation in a way that doesn't come off as completely fricking bizarre and awkward.
