quick question since I am new to this whole Christmas thing...

how do you all open presents? because we go to my inlaws and it takes 5 fricking hours to open presents because everyone had to go 1 by 1 and show each gift and do the fake smile and dance

I do hate that part of Christmas very much...

I have done christmas with four different families, and this is how works at every one of them. Doesn't take 5 hours though, more like 2-3.

Someone passes out the presents. You try to distribute as evenly as possible so it's not the same person 3-4 times in a row, but whatever. No, we don't wait for each person to open fully and show the gift off before we are on to the next one.

It takes an hour at most.

We do this at my parents' house and I never realized how weird it was until me and my brother's SOs told us last year I guess when it is your own family, you don't care/notice.

I really hate the gift opening part with other people's families and even when I'm married, I'd be fine continuing to do Christmas apart with our own families. Or nothing with either family.

We took this route for Xmas morning. Said we will start our own tradition. Xmas eve though...fak...2-3hrs of opening presents for whatever side we have to go to.

its achievable.

In the last 10 years, I have spent christmas morning with my family twice. once the drunk story above. And then once with the wife's family.

the rest of the time, we do our own thing and generally like it.

It helps that my parents couldn't care less about Christmas or if I show up to anything. They've very easygoing and don't care much for the holidays themselves. The only reason I do spend Christmas Eve my own family is because I'd be stuck having to do SO's family thing if I didn't.

Also because Dad writes me a nice check each year in lieu of gifts

Christmas is the biggest day of the year for my MIL, so its hard for my wife to tell her that we would just do our own thing

although we did tell her this year that she would have to move her time to Christmas Eve because we wanted to be home for Christmas morning for our daughter

it took me 10 years to convince my wife we didn't have to do christmas with them every year. patience.
