My brother in law has 3+ feet of water in his home. no flood insurance. Home was built in late 70s never had water anywhere close. Woke up to ankle deep water and before they were rescued had waist deep. Being in a non flood zone what's their options other than being SOL?

Red Cross or another organization like that may offer some assistance. Maybe a local church group? Other than that he's SOL

Like other have said, other than maybe Red Cross or some other similar organization, he is likely SOL.

Flood insurance is relatively cheap, around $400 for me, not in a flood zone. I don't have to carry it but I do. As shown by you Brother in law's current situation, shite can happen.

If he is in a no flood zone, insurance is pretty cheap. If you live in Louisiana and don't have flood insurance, you are a fool.

Sounds like he gambled and the die came up snake eyes...

Somehow, my tax dollars will pay for his bad decision.

Insurance commissioner was just on TV and said only 25% of Louisiana has flood insurance....Said if you don't have it you're SOL other than being eligible for a low interest loan.....

It's probably not wide spread enough to where the government is going to come bail people out.

Red Cross will be able to help with temporary shelter.

Might be some kind of small business loan offered to help with repairs.

If you're not in a flood zone, flood insurance is a negligible expense and with all the flooding in places that have never flooded before recently, it should be obvious that everyone should have Flood Insurance. Floods suck and I feel for your BIL, I went through this after Katrina by not being insured enough. Bon chance
