I personally know a welder contractor safety man that made a little over 200k last year, but he worked T/A the whole entire year.

And those 3rd party HSE managers that's over projects and T/A make serious serious serious bank. Most of those guys are retired safety guys that gets called back for a critical assignment.

Look it up. The average income for an HSE manager is roughly $90k. The ones that make a significant amount more are either above a manager level or work a shite load of hours and overtime.

You would be mistaken. The average might be that outside of oil and gas but the pay is a lot higher in oil and gas. I have had HSE managers and team leaders making more than 200k and most make more than 150.. I have had individual contributors making more than 150....and they don't get paid overtime or work anymore hours than the other professionals around them....

Our HSE coordinators in projects make $100-$125+k based a 40 hour work week. With OT they make a lot more.

HSE managers make a good bit more. I work in finance at a refinery so I see everyone's rates.

Sure there are some with our contractors that make less but I still think your figure looks low. Especially for oil and gas.

The rates are very different for oil field jobs. The data you are referencing is most likely across all industries.

Those IH courses can provide an awareness and detailed knowledge in some areas. Best hire IH folks to do air sampling and chem hazard assessments.

I am an HSE manger for an industrial service company, not O&G involved mostly service paper mills and mine sites. Depending on what type of industry you are getting into you definitely want:
OSHA 501 and 511
First aid/CPR Certified trainer
Confined space and Psm training is a plus.

With a good company, safety can be a benefit to the field employees. We handle the onsite safety, but we also teach the technical training as well as other job specific training. We have a rapport with the guys so it makes it easier than someone who just shows up and starts doing write ups. I have taken the time to learn a lot of the field hands job functions so that I could better understand what they were doing and in turn I can step back and offer suggestions on how it could be done better.

Not sure about La, but you can take 511 and 501 at Ga. Tech. You can probably take them at UAB as well.

If you are in BR or a surrounding area, you can take OSHA 510, 511, 501, 500 at the Safety Council.

501 and 500 have prerequisites. For 500 you have to have taken 510 and have 5 years where a certain percentage of your job is HSE related. 501 you need 511 and the five years, etc, etc.

I would also look at getting ASP from the BCSP, I've been told that one holds a lot of weight. I hope to sit for mine next year.

Depends on where you are located which I am assuming Louisiana. I took my OSHA Trainer course and prerequisites at GA Tech. Looking at the map, the OTI outreach center for your area would be at TAMU or Bama. You can do your CSP certification at the alliance training center in Baton Rouge, but there is stipulations on being able to apply for acceptance to that propgram. Alliance has good training which we have to utilize to work at most of the paper mills we service. They handle the training for TAPPISAFE which is what the paper companies are using to centralize their training plans.

LINK
take a look at this link because it show what course are offered at each outreach center.

I would say to look at trying to get on with a smaller company who will take a chance on you and learning the job from that prospective. They will not pay you as much, but it will give you the knowledge that you will need to succeed. That is what I am doing and once my manager retires, I am set to take over his role and be on the low spectrum of baller status.

What certs do you/company look for when hiring?

CSP is the top cert, followed by ASP.

CHST/OHST is also a decent cert.

Some people like OSHA certs like CSHO. Keep in mind these are industry specefic (Construction, General Industry, etc.)

I work with renewable energy, so I am not sure about the oilfield, especially right now. I can tell you that you can get hired into a safety role, but it will be difficult if you don't start getting some certs.

I am on a 272 million dollar project. My salary is chump change to what my company is making. I also work 65 hours a week or so, so I rack up OT.
