I've been interested in getting into this field ever since getting out of the military. The job description entails a majority of my responsibilities when I was in, but seems like most of the civilian sector appointments require civilian sector experience.

I've been working in other fields for the past few years. Any suggestions on how to get started?

Do you have a college degree? If so, look into a BCSP certification.

To get started look into taking the COSS and/or NCCER CSST class.

I just figured with the threads about cargo shorts and Catholic's basketball coaching staff, I could get a thread in there.

HSE Manager here
If your experience is close to what some HSE personnel do on the job, some companies will take a chance.
The big factor here are your certs.
A lot of companies, especially now that times are tough, don't want to spend the extra money sending people to get their certs. They are looking for people that already have their certs
I am hiring HSE personnel for land right now.. I've turned down over 200 people already and looked at over 600 resumes in the last month, but everyone I talk to I tell the same thing..... experience is great and counts for half, but you need to be in compliance and have your OSHA 30s, Confined Space Competent Person, Fall Protection, Fire Fighting, Rigging, First Aid/CPR, and Safe Gulf/Safe Land.
Those certs carry a lot of weight
Hope this helps

I thought about looking into that as well. I'm looking for something in Emergency Management or Disaster Preparedness Planning, and outside of the public sector there is almost NOTHING. HSE jobs were the most frequent thing that popped up when I was searching for the other stuff though.

The HSE guy is basically Toby from the office.

Bingo.... Except Toby was kind of needed in that office environment. Every HSE guy I had to work with was completely useless. I'm not saying all are, but the ones we've had were. And not because they were annoying to deal with. But because it was really difficult to understand why they had a job. A safety spec would come out, and they basically just read it to us in a meeting. We had an incident and had to come up with a safer way to do something, then the operations group came up with the solution while they sat in the meeting. Safety guy was this random guy that would make statements at meetings that everybody looked at him with a "why are you here" look.

Just follow the rules and there won't be a reason to not like the safety guy.

But when y'all screw up in the field, guess who goes to bat and defends all the workers with the client and keep y'all working and getting more future contracts.

Think about it.

Given the current market it may be tough to enter the upstream market now without any experience. The downstream side may be easier to enter. To be a good HSE coordinator not a safety cop it helps to have worked the job(s) you will have HSE responsibility for. Having worked in operations for 7-8 years helped me tremendously in the transition to HSE. Also, as some have stated the certs helped. Attaining my CSP has paid dividends.

I am a HSE Cordinator and I work on the pipeline side. while on the job I gross a little over 12k a month. Not on the job I get 6k a month. But I work 10 to 12 months every year the only draw back is you will live out a camper most of the year. If you are conservative with your money you can have a nice savings in a few years.

Start by putting "Non-potable water. Do not drink." signs over all the toilets. You could save someone's life.
