That story is either made up or you and your friends were a frogs hair away from being crab food and permanent parts of the geology of said area. No in between.

The owner of the yard crew at my friends place in middle school and freshman year used to pick us up from school when his parents couldn’t. About a year later they all got arrested and charged with drug trafficking and various murders/hits. They were all Salvadorans and linked to MS-13. Really nice to us and used to give us a few grams here and there.

I’m assuming they didn’t have the MS13 or devil horn tats all over their face though?

Nope. The main guy didn’t. The rest had tattoos all over the arms and what not but no face tats.

The rumor in college (Lafayette) was that you could go down and unload shrimp boats in the marsh in the middle of the night and get $1,000 a shift. But if you got caught you went to pound-you-in-the-arse prison with everyone else.

In the mid 1980's we had a neighbor who lived across the river from us. He had this huge house on several hundreds of acres. As kids we would sneak onto his place and fish and hunt. Rumor was he flew coke into his private airfield and had a vault beneath his barn. We would see him everyday jogging along the road with several german shepards keeping pace and a car following not far behind.

Then one day his place gets raided. FBA, ATF, DEA, and local PD. I remember watching his plane take off when just before the raid. The next day an agent stopped by our house and asks my dad if he could speak with me. I was about 10 at the time. The agent pulls out multiple photos of my friends and I hunting, fishing, swimming on this guys property. Turns out his security was watching us the entire time. It was creepy as hell.

His property was taken over by the state and eventually auctioned off. No one ever found the owner once his plane took off. I still remember his name and last I heard he was suspected to have settled in Columbia. He was a good neighbor as far as I remember.

SWIM knows another person who was smuggling well over 100 lbs from Oregon to a state in the Deep South. They were pulled over in some bumfrick town in West Texas. Local LEOs tried to shake them down for cash (they only had petty traveling cash at that point). They were in the holding cell and the feds busted in to arrest the local LEOs. This person was released without charges or anything confiscated.

A long time friend was a big dealer in North La, he never got caught before he retired from dealing. He got his drugs from his uncle who was a mob member that's in jail now for a long list of charges.

I helped smuggle Barry Seal out of Baton Rouge after he faked his death, does that count?

So the feds were in on the smuggling?

No. They were busting the local LEOs for shaking down smugglers, I think. I don't know the whole situation.

It's a believable story because that area is used to be a major interest in carbonate sedimentology.

Was driving on a back road south of Tucson and saw shell casings all over the place and a wrecked car. I didn’t stop and just kept going.

Honest truth. One weekend while I was stationed at Ft. Sam, three of us drove to Colorado (non stop) and bought six cases of Coors beer, then drove straight back (non stop) to the base with them hidden in the trunk.

Our friends in the barracks helped us destroy the evidence over the next week.

A couple of weeks later, we were asked to do it again and said no.

I am not claiming our adventure was the basis for Smokey and the Bandit, but we passed by several State Troopers during the drive so we were so close.

Me and some friends were in New York back in November 2008. We were walking back to my friends apartment at like 2am and we cut through this super sketchy alley. Typical Batman, Gotham city lookin alley.

Anyway, we got by some apartments and this Porsche Cayenne pulls up and parks like 10 ft from where we are walking. This jacked black dude with dreads gets out, puts on this crazy airbrushed lookin bulletproof vest, pulls a pistol with a suppressor out of the car, shuts the door and runs into this apartment building holding this gun up. We all took off running.
