I run the chains for Benton. I don't see how anybody could be a high school ref. They get bitched at and cussed relentlessly for 3 hours every Friday night and just sit there and take it.

I've worked every single position on the field... I will agree, you block it out at some point. I think of it as a six shooter... you only have so many bullets in the gun. Once you use them, you're done. So my advice to any coach on here is, use your shots wisely... use them on the big play in the 4th quarter... not the "hold" that happened 30 yards from the ball carrier.

I'm headed to North Louisiana this week to call... should be a fun one.

You develop thick skin. Even with a coach in your backpocket as a wing official, you learn that 22 kids on the field matter a heck of a lot more than one upset coach who's behind you. Fans dont' matter at all.

ke team K is in scrimmage kick formation and it is 4th and 8 at it's own 45 yard line. The ball is kicked and R receives it but during the kick prior to the ball crossing the neutral zone team R is guilty of a illegal block below the waist. Team R receives the ball and returns the ball to its own 30 where the ball is then fumbled and recovered by K - however during the play after the kick team K is guilty of a blindside block. After the play a player for team R takes his helmet off and slams it into the ground on the field of play. is it" A; first down for K B first down for R C Replay the down D clean hands rule - first down team R but penalized 15 yards.

C.
Then A. after enforcing the 15 yard UNS against R.

Why not A. as well?
I’m penalizing R for UNS.
So 4th and 8 becomes 1st and 10.

Admittedly I probably do more film study than 95% of guys. I like to watch my game from last Friday night to see particular plays as well as self-evaluate.

How do you get tape from the games? I am asking out of curiosity. Do you have to request the team FedEx it to you or something?

Most HS use HUDL now. Here in Alabama as well as Louisiana. Officials can watch the plays via HUDL. It's a super tool. They just upload the video to HUDL and then it allows people to view it play by play.

There's always that as well. But usually that's never a good thing.

HUDL allows us to critique things that even the coaches don't see.

But yes...Coaches send in footage as well.

How do you sign up with HUDL as an official? I checked the sign up form and it doesn't list official as a "role". Do you just use "fan/parent" or is there an established team for officials?

Is there much use of this by baseball programs?

Our Association signed us up. They have the account.

I don't know about Baseball. I only officiate football, but I can ask as a lot of our football officials are also baseball/softball officials as well. In fact the head of the North Alabama Baseball is in our association as well.

I don't think enough HS teams film games to use hudl for baseball. I am signed up as a coach.... but that's another story.

Spent 10yrs as a JrHigh and HS Basketball Coach and then 7yrs as an LHSAA Basketball Official. Got to the Girls Top 28 my last year but moved to Texas and gave it up

What were you're issues with Coaching?

Kids parents thinking he's greater than he really is/ interference?
Both fans & parents taking HS sports too seriously?

I would assume the issue isnt the kids ?

For a grown adult with a real job... that's not enough money to cause someone to want to officiate. You have to do it for the love of the game.

I am soon to be self employed/ semi retired & thought Officiating would be a great way to make extra money. Actually being involved with something I once loved( HS sports).

Great information here & glad to hear so many mostly positive responses about what it's like being an Official.

Our association has a HUDL account. The schools are very helpful by sharing their film with the association.

The sideline version kinda caught my attention. I'm not up on NFHS football rules, but apparently that would be allowed. Use of video tape/recordings during a live game is strictly prohibited in baseball.
