I umpired when I was younger up to 16 year old baseball. Was wanting to pursue it for a career. Didn’t, and now I am here typing about it.

My older brother refs basketball. Mostly younger grades and JV, not much varsity but sometimes.

Former official. Officiated Football, Basketball and Baseball/Softball for 10 years.
Really enjoyed it and enjoyed travelling around the state to places I normally wouldn't have visited.
Would love to officiate again but work and raising a kid put a halt to that. Will definitely try to get involved again in the future.

What school do you dread officiating knowing you'll have issues? Is it the coaches or the crowd that you dread?

you must have this confused with moster

I'm a former HS coach and AD
We had some great FB officials crews. I loved working with them.
But basketball and Volleyball...It was a crapshoot on whether you got a good crew or someone who blazed up in their car before walking into the gym.

None. HS level I never had a problem with any coaches - the fans I tune out.
below HS is more problematic...
1. less knowledge about rules
2. less training as coaches

It’s both ways. The LHSAA officials calling middle schools games don’t care because they aren’t getting rated. So it leads to crappy/lazy officiating. And they immediately think you don’t know the rules as a middle school coach. Never mind that I passed the test and officiated HS ball for 3 years

Just curious, how many blown calls do they make on purpose?

Mainly I am referring to new or changed rules like the recently added blind side blocks, targeting, cut block changes, face guarding is now legal and in LA only this year the the experimental intentional grounding change.
If I care enough to get jocked up and go work a game be it between two 5A powerhouses or two winless 1A teams - the kids from all four work and prepare just as hard, the parents care just as much and so do the coaches at all FOUR - they get and deserve my full effort. Same for the sub varsity and the (few) middle school games I work). If I am on a crew and somebody is not giving the game the effort it deserves - I speak up.....
Yeah I had a coach tell me he was an official for 5 years blah blah blah.. and I was wrong on this that and the other - I calmly asked him when was the last time he looked at the rule changes on NFHS website..... silence...
as for not being rated... you'd be surprised at who is out watching officials in sub varsity and ms level games.......

For a lil while. Wish I still could.

Officiated football and baseball in HS and college. Gave it up when I graduated college because I was working so many hours at work, and then got married, etc.
Would like to get back into it some day when the kids are a bit older. It helped me stay in shape.

How much does that pay? It seems like that would be a fun way to make some exta money

Good for you. It's my biggest complaint. If you're going to collect money from our school, put in the effort and go hand the ball in for throw ins, make sure you're rotating in position and actually moving down the court for fast breaks.

In my case its related to basic rules of basketball that haven't changed.

There's no way the habitual offenders of what I'm talking about earlier are getting rated at these games in BR.
