Yes they do. Is any child going hungry no matter okay with you? It isn't the kid's fault for having crappy parents. I'd rather my tax dollars go to feeding kids than to over blatted middle management government employees.

Exactly. I'm perfectly fine with my money going towards that. Kids need food to grow and have energy to learn and focus. Plus many of them have terrible parents, single moms/deadbeat dads, or parents that can't afford it. Makes me thankful that I was born into a loving family that had enough money to ensure our needs and wants and never went hungry. 95% of these kids don't have that.

I'm sure I'm coming across as an a-hole, and that certainly isn't my intention. For visual evidence, I present a malnourished, not hungry american child. NOTE: This picture doesn't mean I reject that there are legit hungry children in America, just that they're not the rule.

Jesus. I'd say that kid has probably been injecting himself with McDonalds shakes for years, but everyone knows those shake machines aren't reliable enough for that.

I think it's kind of insulting to all the children in SA, CA, and Africa to say American kids are going hungry. Talk about Americans needing a serious reality check.

Are you saying that feeding kids at school is going to be the charitable action that ruins society

Not at all. It's just one more action in a long line of acts that remove responsibility from the individual ( parent). But at what point does the parent take accountability? They can't afford lunch for their kid. Or pencils. Or notebooks, rulers and any host of required school supplies. If we constantly pay everyone's way, what is the stimulus for them to pay for themselves.

I agree it's not the kids fault. Their suffering is the damnable part of it. And I know there are legit hardship cases. But everybody? Really?

Well, when you think about it, it's only a 4% increase in meal costs to the EBR School System - I'm sure 96% of the student body had free meals anyway...

Truth

And many of them complain and don't even eat it. They'd rather go hungry than eat it I guess

This was an issue when I was in school many years ago and is often cited as a primary reason for providing lunch for all students. If we can remove one source of low self respect for kids at relatively low cost, I certainly support it.

And that's the thing. We've all seen pictures of truly starving kids. Today I watched a show on Somalia and those kids have nothing. And when I look around at poor people in the US, they are often obese. I've been around poor people in Nola and I don't recall ever seeing a kid who truly looked hungry.

Not saying it doesn't happen bc I'm sure it does, but it is hard to believe there are millions of truly hungry kids.

Pizza and corn, in what universe does that actually go together. I remember in school, they never served pizza without the corn. I thought it was the best thing ever. I would fold my pizza after pouring corn on it, thought it was the best thing ever. But growing up we'd order pizzas Id always ask my mom where is the corn and shed just give me this wtf face.

Not to mention those peaches, Id go around the table trying to see who all did not want their peaches. Man that pic just brought back memories

frick this. I'm sick and tired of govt enabling people to be freeloaders. I've got no problem helping true indigent families. But we feed everybody. Christ, I've stuffed the bus, fed the need, packed the sack, etc. at what point does charity become enabling?

I don't know where the line is drawn, but I'm pretty sure it's way after "feeding kids"

I think a lot of people are missing the boat on this. It isn't about the kids but is being sold that way. By increasing the free meals they can increase the financial inflow of cash to "support" this initiative. From there it will allow them to hire more, potentially unneeded, employees. Also if they can skim a few cents off the top of each meal they can create a better financial situation.

Case in point- I know of an after school program at a Catholic middle school that provides snacks for those who attend. It has been specifically stated that ALL children must go through the food line daily, even if the food won't be consumed. These counts are used and provided to the government for funding of the snack program. Therefore they are artificially inflating the real need for food to potentially capture more revenue.

I am all for kids eating but don't believe that is the real reason this is being done. Somewhere there is a financial motive for the districts to grab what they can because it is "free" or essentially paid for by someone outside their district. I would love to see them measure the waste of meals and improve that.

At Mandeville Junior High they had the meal of the day, which I don't remember being too healthy.

And every day, the alternative meal to the meal of the day was a slice of pizza on top of a bed of French fries. Soooo healthy!
