The East Baton Rouge Parish school system will be providing free lunch to its almost 42,000 students, including thousands who in the past had to pay for their meals. The change, announced Monday, takes effect Aug. 11, the start of the 2014-15 school year.

Is EBR the new Detroit?

I think it's wonderful. Instead of a war on drugs we need a war on poverty.

My lunch in high school consisted of a Coke and Grandma's cookies.

A war on poverty hasn't done any better than the WOD.

That was such an asinine program from LBJ that has done more harm than good.

I heard or read somewhere that people wanted to provide these kids lunches during the summer.

Well, when you think about it, it's only a 4% increase in meal costs to the EBR School System - I'm sure 96% of the student body had free meals anyway...

I like it.

Normally only the. "low income" students get free lunches. They're giving lunches to regular kids, too. Sounds good.

They do. They even pick them up by bus and haul them groups at a time.

It's been awhile since I had a lunch in a school cafeteria, but they generally weren't worth five cents to start with. They tasted like cardboard.
