re: Action against shady car dealer advice.... (UPDATED)

I've never heard of getting the plates from the dealer. You have to go yourself with the paperwork and proof of insurance to get them.
ETA. Louisiana is different judging by everyone's responses. In Alabama and Florida, you buy the car and take all of the paperwork to get your own tag.

He paid them the sales tax... lot more than $20 on a $17000 purchase. Not getting tags without proof of that.
I was saying that there is no excuse for the dealer taking this long because someone in this thread was trying to blame it on the DMV which is bullshite considering private owned title places and the DMV can get you a plate the same day. The title places just do it faster.

I have a bill of sale which says how much I paid in TTL. You're saying I can take that to the DMV and get plates? Seems like the one who received that money would have to do that.
I have no idea... but it'd probably be pretty easy to walk into the Louisiana Used Car Commission and ask them.

I would sue the dealership.
It would cost you more to sue than what the penalty most likely is and if it's under $5000 you go to small claims anyway.
Just contact the attorney general and report them for unfair business practices.

Most dealerships, you pay the TTL with the sale of the car and they get the plates for you. Not in this case apparently. They just take your TTL and screw you.

Nope. You will have to pay TTL again.

Adam, did you pay cash for this vehicle or did you get a loan for this?
If so, get the lender involved and tell them you still do not have plates/registration.

Cash. Hence why I already have the title.

Certainly not them DMVs fault. The fault resides with the dealer and them not perfecting the title work within the allotted time.

quote:I got $19.5k for my 08 CC 4x4 Lariat 6 months ago. It was a hunk of shite (engine wise). Ran fine when the guy test drove it though.
what you have to give for that? I got 13k for one earlier this year but the motor was most likely blown up
Originally agreed to pay me $22k for it. I drive to Gulfport and the dude says he'll buy it, and we go to his bank. As soon as we get out, he drops on me that his bank will only give him $19.5k.
A week later, the dude non-stop blew up my phone because it broke again and his mechanic couldn't figure out what was wrong. The transmission also blew up because he turned up the programmer and ran it at the track. I told him that if he wanted my advice, he could pay me the extra $2500 that he agreed to pay me before I drove to Gulfport. He denied, and as far as I know, he is bankrupt from the truck.
I actually had the lead diesel mechanic at a very reputable shop explain to me that about 1 in 100,000 trucks are cursed, and will never be able to be fixed 100%. Mine was that one.
That truck actually caused me to change careers because of the repair bills
OP, for my current truck, I paid cash in full in Texas and left with a bill of sale and some temporary Texas papers. The next week, the dealership sent me the title that they had to get printed from the TX DMV. I went to the title place will bill of sale, title, and insurance, and they gave me a plate in 20 minutes. I'm not seeing your problem

His problem is... In LA it is the norm to pay the dealer the tax and license fees and they go to DMV (or a 3rd party) and have the plates mailed to you.
If they don't, you're screwed out of those fees, and worse, the sales tax.
He will get his plates, or they will go out of biz, is my guess.

la. secretary of state says that "neighborhood motors" is a trade name owned by MDG associates, in which Michael Dalton Greene is the officer/owner. La. used car commission has similar info. now you know who you are dealing with.

With your vehicle purchase paperwork, you should have signed a Power of Attorney for the dealer to apply for tag & title for you. Check your paperwork to see what limitations and details there are. It might even spell out what your next action should be. There are many things that could have happened... heck the mail delivery or shipping address may be the issue.

If you didn't have a trade-in, I'm assuming you paid about $1700 in TTL. If you go to the DMV to get a license and registration, you'll have to pay that.
Sounds like the dealership has your money and hasn't paid the taxes on it yet. Go by or call them and tell them they have 2 days to get your registration and license or you're going to the Used Motor Vehicle Commission. shite will get done. Good luck.
I had a used car lot years ago. 90% of the time I'd give the person the title and bill of sale and they'd go to the DMV or a title service themselves and pay TTL or their bank would handle it.
Only thing I can think of is they are having money problems and used your TTL for something else and don't have the cash to pay your TTL.
Keep us updated.

. I received the title and I like the truck,
did you pay them state registration fees?
If so bring your reciept to a OMV/DMV and give it to them and explain the situation. They should issue at least a temp tag.
But if you paid your fees and they kept them then they are in trouble with the state. You coulod save and not even get a lawyer.
If you had a "handshake" agreement that they would pay the taxes and you get the plates, then more than likely you got hosed.
No plates before you pay the taxes. Did you pay the taxes? Then prove that to the state and get your plates.
