Friend,

It appears you and mother had a wonderful weekend. Though not well liked on the OT, I too enjoy a lovely weekend of waking in fall New Orleans.

I was going to add that New Orleans is incredibly walkable if you ignore the citizens. When we had that thread a few months back that showed a drive by in suburbia, I probably searched street view for 4 days trying to get a location. It turned out to be in Texas, but a few of us noticed early on that New Orleans has sidewalks EVERYWHERE. The whole city almost.

one could print and bind this thread and pass it out at the convention center or airport, so well done is this "day in the city" travelogue

Friend, by my calculations, you walked over 15 miles. Nicely done.

Would be great if they would treat it like they do in parts of Europe. Keep the downtown old areas of the city clear of the freaks and riff-raff.

Is this an old photograph, or has this performer been replaced with a doppelganger?
"Uncle Louie" was arrested for murder in 2017.
He had a warrant from Jacksonville, Florida from a 1974 murder.

quote:

NEW ORLEANS – A street performer well known in New Orleans as Uncle Louie is in custody, accused of fatally shooting a Jacksonville store clerk during a robbery almost 43 years ago.

The New Orleans Advocate reports 60-year-old Johnie Lewis Miller was arrested Tuesday on a murder warrant.

quote:

Court records indicate Miller is wanted for the May 22, 1974, slaying of 34-year-old Freddie Farah, who was working at the Grand Park Food Store on Kings Road when he was shot to death.

Miller was linked to the slaying after evidence matched a profile stored in an FBI database.

Court records at the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office show Miller is being held without bond. He refused to waive extradition to Florida during his first court hearing on Wednesday. and is awaiting a June 26 extradition hearing.

Miller is an icon in the French Quarter, where he's performed as a human statue for more than two decades.

People frequently take pictures with him and his miniature stuffed dog, Little Willie.

ETA: He pleaded guilty and was set free. He is now back on the streets of the French Quarter.

It was he who ran off to New Orleans and spent decades trying to be nice to children to make up for his sins.

quote:

Miller could have faced life in prison had his case gone to trial. But with the blessings of the Farah family, Miller on Wednesday pleaded guilty to a lesser murder charge and then walked out of the courthouse a free man after being given credit for the 344 days he has spent in jail.

quote:

Bobby Farah, Farah's only son, was just 6 when his father died. While he and his family could have been angry about the case, Wednesday they showed grace and thanked the Sheriff's Office detectives who never gave up as well as Nelson and prosecutor Pam Hazel.

Before leaving the courtroom, Miller turned toward a tearful Farah family and mouthed the words "Thank you." Bobby Farah in return flashed him a thumbs-up.

"He came clean with a lot of questions that I had for him and once he did that, I know it sounds crazy, but it kind of relieved me," Bobby Farah said. "Am I upset that he is not spending time? I'd rather him answer my questions and give me the answers that I have been looking for all my life than to have him sitting in jail without anything.

"So we are ready to move forward," Farah said. "... Pretty much everything I asked him, he had a legitimate answer. I felt he was very truthful. He was very remorseful. If he didn't tell me he was sorry 50 times, he probably said it 100 times. And that kind of set the tone for the conversation."

If you can stay alive, New Orleans is a very beautiful walkable city. Not very bike friendly, but definitely fun to walk

Great Post. Good ole New Orleans used to be the best of times.
Love walking the city. My favorite kind of day.
I have a lot of great memories in NOLA
My friends and I used to ride our bikes all the time
Then lock them up and go out that night.

Nice Cobra

Good stuff as always, mate.

Do you walk with a well-behaved four legged companion? If not, I cannot recommend trying it strongly enough. It will gain you unexpected invitations, access to conversations you otherwise wouldn't have, and give you the freedom to explore places that would otherwise make you seem odd.

Has to be a doppelganger. On street view, the sign next to M.S. Rau didn't say "The Soap Tree" until the June 2023 image. As recently as March 2022 it was called "Rachel's Best Soaps"

In a world that is divided, on fire, and quite literally teetering on the edge, your posts are always a wonderful respite from the madness. What you offer us is a gift. Thank you. Truly.

(That said, I also enjoy some of the other posters who do the "Babe" and "WYHI" threads.)
