I think the valuation is based more on the fact that this is set up to change the way goods and services are logistically delivered. The ride sharing portion is just scratching the surface of what Uber will be doing in 3-5 years.

Just wait until they are established in ~80% of global cities. It will be like crowd sourced FedEx with deliveries of anything in under an hour.

This is a lot different from another tech startup, say a Facebook or Twitter, in which valuations are based on hazy, ill-defined "monetization" concepts. Uber at least has cash flow, isn't very capital intensive at all, has a ready and willing workforce, a huge customer base, and an unprecedented runway for growth.
