Nic and Trees Elderhorst, both 91, died in their hometown of Didam, in the Netherlands, after 65 years of marriage. The couple both suffered from deteriorating physical health over the past five years, with Mr Elderhorst left with reduced mobility after a stroke in 2012.

Walking had also become increasingly difficult for his wife, who had also suffered from memory loss.

Physician-assisted suicide is legal in five US states. It is an option given to individuals by state law in Oregon, Vermont, Washington and California. It is an option given to individuals in Montana via court decision. Individuals must have a terminal illness as well as a prognosis of six months or less to live. Physicians cannot be prosecuted for prescribing medications to hasten death.

Should be legal in every state. Slowly dying of cancer, Alzheimer's and the like has to be one of the worst things imaginable.

Absolutely. I don't understand why people are against this.

Terrible to take your life early. Jesus made clear he wants us all to suffer till the very end. None of this shortcut shite.

Some of it may be true beliefs, that "life is precious" and all that other bs.

The real reason this isn't even an option is that roughly 40% of medical costs in this nation are spent in your final year or so of life.

Thank God I've never been in that situation before, so I can't judge these people for this.

If you're a true believer, you know that suffering is fine and dandy under the heading God's Will. It's one of the reasons I never say T&P on Facebook. It's a waste of time for both God and myself.

Here is how your life ends if you are a cancer patient and you are out of treatment options, they just pump you full of drugs until your body dies. May take a week, may take a month. But hey another 2 weeks with the family.

End of life needs to be about the person that is actually ending their life.

Without condemning or condoning, all I can say is I get it.

Nobody wants to watch the love of your live wither away and die after 65 years of marriage. While they still had some capacity to make a decision, they made one.

It's sad, and I'm not sure if I can condone suicide, but I get it.

I think the wife and I would be down for this, though I'm thinking somewhere around 75.

I get so irritated with family members who do that crap. Something good happens and it was because they were saying the rosary. When the big baton rouge flood happened the only reason people went and spent time helping the flood victims was because they stayed home and prayed. Pray in one hand, shite in the other. Which fills up first?

Jesus made clear

By made clear you mean communicated to a handful of people in a now dormant language so that they could tell someone who would tell someone who would write it down so someone could read it later and add it to something so it could be voted on and eventually published?

Crystal. Clear.
