Being from central Illinois I drive back a lot and catch WWL very clear in the colder months in the evening for the whole 12 hr drive back. I remember as a kid too being able to pick it up every once in awhile. Now being down here in the colder months i can get in the evening WLS out of chicago and WLW out of Cinncy

When I was stationed in Alamogordo, New Mexico I used to listen to LSU games on WWL. Had to be at night though. It wasn't all that clear and had to turn it up to hear it. My wife thought I had lost my mind.

The station across the river from Del Rio, TX cranked it up to nearly a million watts back in the 30s and could be heard worldwide, sometimes even during the day. It's the one that the Carter family got famous on.
The saying was you didn't need a radio in South Texas, you could hear it on the barbed wire fences.

I remember it used to be the only way to listen to LSU basketball, baseball, and football as a child in Houston. One of my earliest memories of WWL was hearing Clarence Ceasar's "Ceeeaaasssaaaarrrr!" name over the radio.

Now that you've mentioned it...I definitely have heard LSU games on the radio driving to/from Georgia games and trying to find a postgame show

I have caught WWL as far west as Arizona, near Tucson, and as far North as Port Jervis NY. KMOX and WWL are the two strongest stations in the country.

WWL had an all night trucker show
In the '70s and into the '80s it was "Charlie Douglas and the Road Gang" on WWL AM from about 8:00pm to well after midnight. Their target audience was over-the-road truckers with a slight shout out to inland mariners. It was basically Country Music formatted. They'd give weather reports based on Interstates, so they'd start with one coast and tell you everything of note weather-wise on I-10 (for example) from Jacksonville, FL to Santa Barbara, CA. They'd also throw in a Justin Wilson joke or the like...
As to KMOX from St. Louis, through the '30s and into the '60s, it was the only way to hear live MLB games in the South. That's why two full generations of Southerners were heavily Cardinal Baseball fans.

Goes further at night. Listened to LSU post game on the drive back to Jacksonville after the UF game this year. And we picked up a women's final four game in Southern Illinois on 870.

I remember driving back from Charleston and catching it somewhere south of Atlanta. I honestly couldn't believe it.

RIP Clyde Clifford!
First heard the Allman Brothers and Yes on Bleaker street. Dumped a lot of change into street corner pay phones trying to make a request to the show.

I think those Mexican stations are still amped up. That Spanish jibber jabber stills comes in loud and clear at night. How do they talk that fast?

I've heard it in Michigan when I was there, generally got decent signal. Listened to both Saints and LSU games at night.
I can get it clear in N. Texas as well.

Yep, those AM stations can reach a long way. When I lived on Napoleon Avenue I could occasionally pick up KDKA (although usually had a spacey woooo-woooo-woooo effect to the sound).
Before I moved to Texas recently, in MI, I've picked up stations from Chicago/NYC(WCBS, mostly)/Boston(/St.Louis(KMOX)/Pittsburgh-KDKA/Minny(WCCO).
WWL for the most part was pretty good, although I once got KOA Denver in SE Michigan. That was neat
