Nah. You are actually the very definition of middle class.

Which is why the lifestyle that you can afford matters more than a dollar amount in regards to class, IMO.

which is always the trouble with this topic

some people define it by lifestyle, while others define it by scale

I prefer scale because its the easiest and most consistent definition

too many variables as to why someone's lifestyle could be better or worse with the same salary

I guess our definitions of middle class vary.

100k in Louisiana is different than 100k in California, though. So, although the number is consistent, the value of that number is not.

right

and there are many other variables that could reduce or increase the value of that $100k

thus the reason why I believe defining the income classes by lifestyle is too inconsistent

Take the average family of four earning a household income of say, $50-$60k a year. They're living paycheck to paycheck. Each parent drives 8-10 yr old vehicle (all they can afford). No vacations. No fancy dinners/clothes/etc. Basically, just getting by.

That's not middle class to you?

Have you ever watched The Middle? I day they still are middle class and struggle with certain things.

I believe the middle class is very very broad and can encompass those living paycheck to paycheck and those living comfortably.

I think the upper class is small and relatively unattainable for most.

I think know the lower class is deceptively large. You don't see them because you don't drive down those streets. Or you don't see the rural country places where people live without electricity.

Middle class for a single person around here is probably $35-65k. For a family, maybe $50-150k combined. Over or under those numbers, you have experienced anxiety at the ATM, or you don't have a problem with necessary bills.

I guess that's lower middle to me. You aren't poor, but you aren't comfortable at all.

$12/hr is middle class? That's all you have to make if both parents are working and making a combined 50k.

I mean I get what you're saying, but you can't really judge those outside factors when measuring this kind of stuff.

If you can't have kids because they'll cramp your middle class lifestyle, then you're not middle class. Obviously there is a limit on that though.

$180k combined income would qualify then.

My dad started work in 1960 fresh out of college with his B.S. (Engineering Physics) for $5,400 per year. That sounds outrageous...till you look at the CPI Inflation Calculator. That equates to about $44,000 per year now.

I mean that's what the true "middle class" is. If your household income is more in the $75-$100k range, you're in the "upper class" of income earners. That's just what the data shows. A lot more people live paycheck to paycheck than most would believe.

If you're in the south then 200k is certainly upper class. Middle class families may take a vacation once or twice a year at most. I would probably draw the line at 130k combined for entry to the upper class.

If you make $12/hr you are poor IMO. That might make me an a-hole, though.

Well it will be a lot easier for their kids to do better than them!

(Somebody probably already said that, not reading the whole thread.)
