This thread is further proof that people really need to get out more and socialize with people outside of their HOA.

People have a crazy belief that you just have buckets of cash. I'm in a 300k house, have a 33k and 24k car, pay daycare, 401k, insurance, and a hefty student loan bill. I'm not living extravagantly at all and maybe save 1200 a month (and not always). Now I admit bonuses have gone down and we'll make more like 180k combined this year, but we aren't by any means rich or "upper class" . I could maybe afford a 400k house or a luxury name brand vehicle, but itshe not like I have buckets of cash to do so.

dude...I don't know what to you tell you, but you are completely out of touch with reality

you put more money into savings than most people make in a month

Why do you keep responding to me?

But that's a very valid point. This dude is either lieing about his income, lieing about his life style or his wife is fleecing him

I think you can't include someone with a 500k income to someone with a 200k income. Just as you can't compare 200k with 30k. I think there is lower, lower middle, middle, upper middle, and upper. The higher you get the larger the range. Until you get to upper. There is a small portion (1%ish) that is truly in a class that has much more wealth than the rest. And I just don't think you can put a family making 200k in the same class as Donald Trump or Warren Buffet.

Agreed. They should send each applicant home with a file and make them turn in a complete work up in five days. They can use any resource they desire.

I mean this is the only explanation. Whether or not he considers it "upper class" is irrelevant. He has no idea what "middle class" actually is.

The income distribution in the upper tail is going to grow exponentially, but even if you're not elite, you're not in the middle class.

Try telling this to literally anyone in the middle class and they'll beat the shite out of you.

That would sure beat the hell out of memorizing a bunch of Code articles that (depending on your practice area) you'll never use. And when you occasionally need it, you can look it up

Then break down the upper class into more segments, but don't try to include yourself with the middle class.

120k student loan doesn't help certainly. And I'll admit that is savings on top of retirement.

I'm not pretending it's not comfortable. It's completely and totally comfortable. But I am surrounded by people who make more and have more. They may also be in "my bubble" but there are plenty in another "bubble" above us. I just don't think you can lump people into that upper class at that level. Same as you can't lump someone making 30k (very livable wage although tough) with someone making 10k per year. The concept of upper/middle/and lower is more defined by the lifestyle it affords you. Can you put food on the table, can you shelter yourself, or do you have enough to start your own business or employ people. I think 200k is closed to middle class in that way than it is to a millionaire.

so $500k isn't upper? $1 mil/year?

because you can't compare that to Trump either

the differences between lower, middle and upper are not the lifestyles or the extravagance of the things they own, its the ability to be able to afford basic needs

lower class struggle to afford for basic needs, like utilities, healthcare, food, gas, etc

middle struggle to save enough for retirement, college, healthcare, etc

upper shouldn't struggle to pay for any of these

if you struggle to pay for any of these at $200k, you just suck at managing money
