Wow, as a black person that likes to call out a lot of racism on this board...after reading this statement, white people, have at it. I cant defend this.

In order for crime to be reduced in Jackson, they need a good police force (which given what they are dealing with, JPD is actually pretty good), good prosecutors (Jxn has a horrible DA and prosecutors office) and good judges (Jxn consistently has the worst judges in the country - especially at the circuit court level excluding Jeff Weill).

I don't know that the crime is increasing in Jackson. However, I think it is undeniable that crime is spreading into the last remaining areas of the city that are decent. Not ironically, these areas also contain the last remaining tax base in the city as well (Belhaven, Fondren, Eastover and Heatherton area).

Jackson, in short, is entering the death rattle stage for a city. It will look very, very similar to a mini-Detroit in the next 5-10 years. Already does in many respects.

Are you suggesting that when areas become predominantly black, they get bad?

Nope...I'm suggesting poverty breeds crime...and poor education...which leads to electing bad judges and district attorneys.

Spot on.

I was in Jackson a few months ago. Stayed at the only decent hotel downtown. That city is really going downhill fast. Not quite a shithole yet, but damn close.

Confessions of a Public Defender is a good read.

The public defender's conclusion:
However, my experience has also taught me that blacks are different by almost any measure to all other people. They cannot reason as well. They cannot communicate as well. They cannot control their impulses as well. They are a threat to all who cross their paths, black and non-black alike.

The woman actually choked on a pill and died. My question was answered - they are charged with murder 1.

If she choked on a pill why are they being charged with capital murder?

I asked before the perps were caught - it was 50/50 on here. I doubt Capital Murder sticks, 2nd degree possibly. The prosecutor is going after Capital because the old money area where this happened is up in arms.

Photo from community meeting last night showed they filled up a decent size auditorium on the campus of Belhaven University.

As someone who has been active in the Jackson community (although limited in the past year due to legal issues and a court injunction regarding the internet) I first hand see these types of boys on a regular basis. They mean no harm but because they have been neglected by our society, they attempt to do whatever it takes survive. As a result, they rob and shoot someone and end up going to prison.

I want to be clear: I am in NO way advocating that the alleged robbers/gunman should have ever shot this woman but to just throw them in jail without at least probation would be doing our city and society a disservice.

For instance, I volunteer occasionally at several community organizations in Jackson. They, along with several other organizations, are in dire need of helpers (who could coach, referee, or entertain by playing in basketball games).

Here's a policy I propose that will severely diminish the crime in Jackson: Mayor Barber, in congruence with DA Smith, form a youth program (for those youths aged 12-19) and build a new youth basketball center (to be worked at and maintained by misguided crime ridden kids such as these) . The building and gym could be financed by taxing a pro rata share of all Jackson citizens who use the city's water along with private donations from the metro area police departments (i.e. Ridgeland, Madison, Rankin, & Hinds).

The other option I would propose would be for Mayor Barber and DA Smith reach out to Dr. Robert Pearigen (President of Millsaps) to maybe have this program instituted on the campus of Millsaps and maybe even have the building (along with some type of dorm) on the East side of campus specifically for these young men.

That would serve two functions: 1) have a place for boys such as these to go (instead of doing harm to society) and 2) it would show Millsaps is willing to reach out and give back to the community. Millsaps students along with inner city youth could even take down the fence together surrounding the campus in a fashion similar to the way Russia took down the Berlin wall. Talk about a symbol! (Think of all the positive press!)

By allowing these inner city youth on campus after school or dark would teach Millsaps students about poverty and racial diversity while simultaneously providing these youth a place to sleep, eat, mingle, and have thought provoking conversations in an educated and intellectual manner.

Doesn't a such facility exist (Mississippi Basketball and Athletics?)

And you think the parents of those $50k a year Millsaps students would allow a dorm for underprivileged young males on their campus?
