The woman, a 22-year-old college junior named Kim, who did not give her last name on air and was allowed to use a voice disguiser to even further shield her identity, came to the three hosts with a confession: in just short three years she had managed to blow through a $90,000 college fund left to her by her grandparents. Kim has one year left of school and no way to cover her remaining $20,000 tuition balance.

quote:

“Maybe [my parents] should have taught me to budget or something. They never sat me down and had a real serious talk about it.”

quote:

“[My parents] said there was nothing they could do for me. They’re not being honest with me saying they don't have [money] because my dad has worked for like a million years and they have a retirement account.”

I blame a little bit on parenting here. I blame a lot on our education system by not teaching these kids anything about personal finance in high school.

Colleges are more interested in teaching social justice than money management

60,000 in tuition and 10,000 a year on other stuff. She should have gone to a cheaper school. Regardless, take out a loan for the last year. Hopefully, she got a degree in a field that actually has jobs.

Absolutely. I lived with a few engineers in college and was amazed that the first accounting wasn't part of their core. I think everyone should take at least one accounting.

Back in my day a girl who blew all of daddy's money would take a little initiative and strip to put herself through college.

If she can't figure out how to come up with $20,000.00, then money already spent on education was wasted.

Sounds like a quick stint in the porn industry should solve her tuition problem.

That goes beyond teaching someone how to budget.

Besides, a $20k loan for 4 years of college isn't bad at all.

Her interview is cringe worthy:

quote:

“[My parents] said there was nothing they could do for me. They’re not being honest with me saying they don't have [money] because my dad has worked for like a million years and they have a retirement account.”

“Then my parents suggested I go take out a loan at a credit union and I’m, like, how am I supposed to do that?"

“I have to go inside the bank to get a loan?”

Bert Show co-host Jeff Dauler: "You could get a job for the school ...maybe the cafeteria's hiring."

Kim: "That’s embarrassing."

And probably getting some useless degree. Blaming her parents for her blowing the money is typical.

It's sad how she doesn't get just how ironic that statement is.

Agreed, though she should shoulder most of the blame for obvious reasons.

I also blame colleges for their disgusting high tuition costs that aren't justified by the value they provide in the market.
