2003 Toyota Highlander thoughts?

My cousin is selling his 2003 toyota highlander that has 220,000 miles on it for $3,000. He is a very trustworthy cousin of mine and he has put all but 19,000 of those miles himself. Oil changes every 3000 miles etc. Recently had a new compressor installed for the A/C.
Sounds like a good deal but anybody have any thoughts or concerns with that particular model? My wife needs an SUV for our daughter and only drives maybe 10 miles a day.

My Mom has one around the same year and more miles than that on it... still driving great.

Probably only has another 250-300k of life in it.

With that many miles, how much other maintenance has he done? If he hasn't changed the timing belt, or things like transmission fluid, you're in for a money pit IMO

Anytime you buy a car that old, with that many miles, you are working under the assumption it will crap out sooner than later. Worse case you sell it for scrap.

If you like it, I would say this is a no brainer. Great cars and oyu will get another 200K or more out of it with routine maintenance.

Just check the maintenance schedule on it. For instance some cars have like 100,000 mile timing belt changes that cost $1000-$1500.
Word on those cars is they're excellent though. I'd certainly consider buying it for so little.

Find out if it has a belt or a chain. If it has the belt and it hasn't been changed, DO THAT IMMEDIATELY. If it has the chain you'll know if it's in bad shape bc you can hear it.

Then you need to have it changed

Wife has a 2004 Toyota Highlander with 195,000 miles and it's running just as good as it ever has.

We have a 2000 Higlander, still runs like brand new.
In fact, we like it so much, we traded in our other car and bought a new 2016 Highlander.

Pretty sure they didn't even make a 2000 model year highlander....

Great vehicles, will last if you care for it.

OK a-hole, it may be a '01, but my point still stands.
Leave it to some dipshit with nothing better do than point out a potential minor error.

when my daughter turned 16 she got a 2000 4runner with over 200K on it.. It made a great first car for a kid that wasn't going to be driving across the country.
I would recommend just about any late model yota for a kids first car. And other than the parts being expensive my daughters 2000 4runner was pretty easy to work on if something did need to be fixed.

you would need to replace all the rubber parts if he didn't do it in the past several years. check around the doors to see if the rubber seals are falling apart.
the price is right even if it needs something major in a year.

Side question but related -
Would you (anyone) advocate for driving it across the country a few times a year?
I'm looking for a crossover/minivan that I can drive between Alabama and Michigan.
